Ok. I have been reaserching lighting. After reading many websites I still do not know what to get. Here is what I am looking for.

9 foot celing.
surface mount
four lamp (side by side not in a row) t8 or t5
protective guard
good quality (comercial ballast?)
made in USA

I have found some high bay fixtures that mostly fit the bill, but can I use them in my garage? I am going to need about six lights so I am hoping that I can keep the costs out of the clouds. I have seen the cheep double bulb lights from the big box stores. but they can't be surface mounted and do not have guards and are not made in the USA.

High bay is usually for 20' & greater mounting heights, & the OP did not specify what type of fixture.

When he says a four side by side lamp fixture that's a T5 or T8 surface mount with a protective guard I kinda had a feeling of what type of fixture he was looking for.

i currently have 3 of these in my garage:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_86723-13537...9_4294937087_?Ns=p_product_price|1&facetInfo=

i will be installing 3 more this spring or sooner. my ceilings are 12' high and they work great.

they are t8....don't buy the t12 set up....also when you go to the big box stores they will have two different models, one cheaper and one more expensive....pay the extra couple of bucks and get the more expensive one. you will thank yourself later.

this one fits just about everything you are seeking.

Very difficult to find USA made light fixtures. I read not too long ago, that in a certain industrial zone near the port of Shanghai......... that about 80% of the light fixtures in the entire world were made there.

I guess I should of said that I was looking for flouresent lighting. A big question that I can't seem to find the answer for is what will happen if high bay lights are used on a lower celing?

rwreuter thanks for the link i found the home depot version here. http://www.homedepot.com/Lighting-Fans-Fluorescent-Lighting/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xh4Zare3/R-100427376/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051

These lamps are almost what I am looking for but they are high bay and not made in USA.

didn't know they were not made in the USA....

as far as highbay lighting in a garage with a low ceiling....

there are almost no rules when it comes to lighting in your building.....look on the box, it will give you the dimensions of the fixture....the more clearance to the ground in a garage the better...

next, check the voltage requirements....often the commercial highbay lighting is going to be other than 120v (208,277), if that is the case then you will not be able to use it.

basically, use whatever fits, looks nice and matches your power capabilities.

My understanding is high bay lights have a narrower focal point. If placed too close to the floor you'll end up with bright spots.

Without getting too political, your USA requirement is very restrictive. That requirement limits you to very expensive and rare fixtures that are not typical.

You are better off finding a company that is all american and seeing if anything they make will fit your garage vs. your current approach of finding what you want and then eliminating due to the USA requirement.

So you want the OP to get ChiCom garbage??? I don't have issues w/ Mexican sourced products, but if it's possible to use domestic products it should be done while there are American factories around to serve that want.

I didn't say anything about "chicom" or mexico. The OP has a single very restricitive requirement. To accomplish that it is best to find the company that satisfies that requirement and then choose from their offerings.

It is the exception, and not the rule, to find a fixture made in america.
