High bay or regular LED?

I'm ready for lighting in my new shop and the information seems conflicting on whether to use high bay or regular LED lights. I've tried to digest all the info on this site and I came up with about 25 of the 4" LED fixtures with the 'best bulbs' listed in the sticky thread for a well lit shop for working on cars. A lot of the other information states that a 12' height should be high bay fixtures but I think the shadowing my be an issue.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

30 x 40 x 12. I was thinking of some kind of box type pattern with the 4' and surface mount to keep the maximum interior height.

^ something like that pattern repeated across the ceiling evenly. I don't know if I will adjust them so that the ceiling fans don't give the strobe light effect, however.

If I went to high bay, I would obviously have less lights and don't know if that would have some dark spots on the floor?

LEDs are directional by nature so look at the beam spread on the particular bulbs you're going to use and go by that. In fact you can vary it by the location if you want to spread light out more or less in various places or positions within a particular fixture. Just buy x 120 degree bulbs and x 170 or whatever the numbers turn out to be, and roll with it.

Personally I would not bother with high bay fixtures.

Imo high bays are for big plants and warehouses with 5-6-7 figure square footage where installing 2 bulb * 4 foot tube-style fixtures would break the bank and take forever to install.
