I need to get some T8 fixtures for my new garage (probably a 2'x4'). I'm looking for a recessed mount unit for the ceiling. I am wondering if any of the Lithonia units at H-D are high bay, or if I just need to go over to a commerical unit.

Ceilings are 19' high.

In speaking with one of the folks here locally who actually build lights, they suggested a T5 HO. FRom what I have ben able to find, no one seems to stock hi bay lights. There are plenty of "regular" fixtures, but no high bay.

I am weighing the option of the T5's, but it appears the T5's are about 1000 lumens brighter, but the bulbs cost about 2x as much.

Another option would be to use regular T8 lights, but instead of fastening them right to the ceiling hang them on chains instead. That would also make it easier to reach them for changing the lamps in the future.

I'm more interested in the cleaner look of a recessed install.

A high bay light is normally an industrial or commercial installation that is hanging from chains or a hook. to find some that are true high bay (proper reflectors, etc) that are designed for recessed installation into a ceiling is probably asking too much.

T5 ballast generate lots of heat, and however you install them, the ballast and top of the fixture needs to be exposed for cooling, and certainly not covered with insulation.

While the T5 bulbs are indeed expensive, they do put out the light, and unless you are going to be running the lights all day every day, you may be years before you replace the bulbs. Cost of the bulbs is probably the least of your worries.

how much does a 4 lamp T5 high bay typically go for? How much are the T5 HO lamps?

I have t-5 High Bay HO lights and would not do it any other way. We have also switched all the lights at work to High bay t-5. I think we are on our nineth pallet of them now.

All of the major mfg's make them. I found 3 at my local supply house. My issue was trying to find enough of them on the shelf. I am calling a few places around town to see if someone has all that I need.

My garage is spray foamed, so there is no insulation on top of the fixtures. Its open into my attic space.

I was looking at 4, 6, and 8 light fixtures and have pretty much settled on a 4 light fixture with one ballast per fixture. Now its just a matter of finding them, otherwise its about a 10 day wait....
