The walls of my shop are 14'. That seems to be borderline high bay or std height. Is it really going to matter what fixture I use?

The new flat panel LED high bay lights are excellent at that height.

How big is your building. The big advantage in using the high bay fixtures is being able to do a decent size building in say 12 lights vs 30 or more.

In a 2 car, regular lights would be better since the number of fixtures may get so low that shadowing becomes a problem. It is not just a height consideration

It’s going to depend on the specific lights of course but in *my* case, hi-bays really don’t cut it. I have a 30x40 post frame with 14’-2”walls. The trusses are on 5’ centers. I had two two-foot-square LED hi-bay luminaires at 20000 lumens each.
I was concerned about beam spread being too narrow so I mounted them way up high between the trusses such that they are over 18’ high.
Yes they are bright bright bright, in the area below them but they are essentially ‘spot’ not ‘flood’, so despite there being two 12~15’ sunspots in the room, the perimeter is substantially unlit. The truss shadows are, of course, another issue but they aren’t that troubling. Having to literally carry something over to the lighted area just to read the label was too frustrating. I picked up a raft of 4’ LEDs from Sam’s and placed them 3’ from the long walls.
My Shop has unfinished spray-foamed walls.
