My ceiling is 16' tall. Does anyone have a suggestion for installing it? Most drywall lifts will only go 15' with the extensions.

That's the way it's done. Roll the scaffold into position, boost a sheet up, hold it in position, nail it up. Takes two people.

This sounds like a dumb question but I have never hung any drywall.

Do you use standard 1/2" drywall on ceilings or something else ?

Use 5/8" if your joists/trusses are on 16" centers. My trusses are on 12" centers so I'll probably use 1/2" drywall.

I did my high ceiling with the help of my brother. He helped me to hang it, but was not into helping mud & tape it. I used a rolling scaffold. It was terrific to have that set 'on loan' while I was finishing the inside of my garage.

I recently paid two professional hangers $1200 to supply and hang 32 sheets of 5/8" 4'x12' drywall on my shop ceiling (10' to 14' high). Took them 6 hours. Money well-spent.

It isn't worth it to do it yourself, unless you have two 20-something sons you can force to do the work.

+another 1...

5/8" sheetrock, at that height, is very difficult to work with, even if you have a team of guys and the best drywall lift / scaffolding that money can buy.

When I built my 24x36, which has a "cathedral" type ceiling, I did all of the drywall work myself...

except for the ceiling.

A local guy charged me $800 bucks to supply the rock, hang it and tape it, ready for light texture (which I did later). He also did the "triangle" sections at each end.

They (team of 3 guys) did the whole thing in 12 foot long sheets. In one day.

If I had done it myself it would have taken me a month of Sundays, immense amounts of back pain, and probably would not have come out nearly as nice.

And, I'd now be trying to get rid of a $400 drywall lift (forget about using those $149.99 lifts for a job like this, it ain't gonna happen)

Think long and hard about how much money you will actually save, and whether it is truly worth it.

Its not to hard if your rent a "high/low" lift. It goes up ,down, and drives around, control ed from the top. 1 guy on the ground doing the cutting 2 others on top hanging. but i agree with the others, just hire it out, because of the economy people work alot cheaper than a few years ago.

The lift is what I rented to do my (only) 12 ft high ceiling. A friend and i did the job, takes 2 people and is hard work. Lift made it easier to a point, but this work was not for two 46 year olds. Drywall needs to come with an age warning - only for 30 and under.

Installing was hard work, the mud and tape was even less fun. Sanding could be done for most part with a long extension pole and no lift needed.

Unless you really have to do it yourself, take my and other's advice and hire it done.
