As some of you guys 'n gals may remember I have a little one on the way. So I decided to see if my old high chair still was at my Moms house.

No I'm not old enough that I sat in this thing when it was new. It was originally bought by one of my aunts in '54 for her son and was passed through the family until it wound up with me in '82, then my nieces and nephews when they came to Grandmas. As you can see it got moved to a damp, muggy shed and time wasn't too nice to it. I like old junk and my wife loves stuff like this so I decided I would surprise her with this forlorn heirloom. So I tore it down.

Then it got blasted in my cabinet.

One of the legs had gotten a bad case of the rust worms. So I found a chunk of tubing in my scrap pile of the same diameterish and made a quickie repair.

Then it was time to give the main body parts a shot of etch primer, sealer, and finally some thinned Rustoleum Sunrise Red and gloss white. The legs got a heavy coat of 2K high build urethane primer to smooth out the pits, they're not perfect but I like to leave character in stuff I know is going to get used.

If you look in the last pic there you will notice I have found a use for those extra long screwdrivers that people get me from the Dollar Store for a buck...... At least I've found a use for them, it ***** as a screwdriver lol!!! The legs had to cure for a little while and while I would have loved to have sent them out to be rechromed, this cat just couldn't bring himself to spend that. I thought about powdercoat but decided against it because I hate projects getting held up due to me being at someone else's mercy. So I reached in the paint cabinet and custom mixed a silver with a few pieces of leftover bright silvers and this is what I came up with.

Not horrible. It looks like unpolished aluminum..... I meant to do that..... Yeah. That's what I'll tell people anyway lol. And here's the finished product ready for my offspring to whack, smack, spit up, puke, and whatever else she dishes out to this thing. I reupholstered the seat quicklike and it has a couple wrinkles but it'll suffice I think.

Looks great, sir! I used a similar chair when I was little. It was bought new in 1973. Has a hideous orange and green vinyl on it. My nephews used it when they were little ones.

I don't think you went wrong by not doing a re-chrome, that silver looks great with the red and white.

Fine job on that highchair sir.

Great job! I have a yellow Cosco chair / stepstool that needs that treatment, I actually hate the thing because I have stubbed my toe on it too many times, but when I try to toss it my wife gets sentimental about it... if I could make it pretty and not wobbly and maybe have padded legs I might not hate it.

Very nice.... Love to see vintage stuff get re-used/re-purposed especially when there is some family history. Now you need to get a picture of you as a little squirt and a picture of your little one when you were/are both in the chair to give to Grandparents for Christmas! :)

That's the brand of this one. As for the legs, I didn't want the metal feet scratching up my floor, plus they were pretty rough anyway. I found those rubber 7/8" pads for mine. I felt the white went pretty good with the overall look of it and gives it a more finished look.

Many thanks all on the compliments on it. The idea on getting a picture of young me and my mini me is pretty cool, I'll see if such a photo exists but it's highly doubtful. We weren't very well off back then, film and random pictures are few and far between back then.

Middle of nowhere.
Now, it time for the safety patrol!

Is all the paint safe for food? Are you sure, the base meet current codes? Is the top / table the safety style so you won't pinch any fingers?

Sorry, I just had to do it! I'm sure (in my mind anyway) this old steel chair, is 100% better the some new plastic Chinese $h!T from Walmart / Costco! Made with God only knows what!!

Nice Job!

nice job, it looks like a cosco. I have done the same to a few of those in step stool form, but never saw a highchair style before. I usually buy em for $5, blast, paint, re-sell for $150....good money In that stuff, hope your child can pass it on again one day...

got a yellow one I am doing now, here's the last one I did:

Gungatim, when I dug mine out I got curious about value and did some Googling. I was surprised at some of the prices these can fetch. I really figured $50 would knock it out. Needless to say it's given me some ideas on some extra income for the shop. I've been trying to get the word out locally that I can do more than just cars, I would really like to quit them altogether and do stuff like this as it's pretty much the same thing but different enough that I don't think my bad case of burnout would slow me as much.

Re: Home Depot Clearance Thread 2015

Nice job. But darn, you must have been a messy eater as a kid. ;)

Yeah, I was thinking that he lived outdoors and was raised by a pack of wolves, but then I saw the line about it being moved into a leaky shed.

You guys do realize I'm one o' dem thar hillfolk hollermonkeys from Kentucky don't you? :badteeth: Lol! I might as well have been raised outside because as a kid I pretty much only came into the house to eat and sleep!:rocker:

Thanks again all for the kind words.

Excellent, that will be around for a long time now.

I did the same with mine, mine is wood and dinosaur bone, didn't have metal in those days.

My grandkids are in it now.

That turned out great. That is a nice touch with you and your child in the same chair at the same ages. Something that could be on the wall in a dual picture frame.

Great job. I'm a boomer and those are the chairs I remember from restaurants. I even thought "Costco" when I saw it. I think my parents were so cheap I never had one. I remember a phone book...

they are pretty easy to re-do, they unbolt, sandblast, fresh paint, new hardware if needed, but usually the back rest is split and needs some re-welding in the center (everyone I've seen is cracked in the center). for the rubber pads on the steps, I get the rubber stair treads from the box/hardware store, cut to fit, and use contact cement. the yellow one I am doing now I paid $1 for at a yard sale...behind that is another yellow one waiting but it has vinyl covering and a bit newer so I need to figure out how to do that one...

yes, crazy what people pay for those things...but a fun quick project to make extra cash...
