Well yesterday my house heat quits working, lucky i have the gas contract so the guy finally gets here was told between 8am and noon ,he arrives at 2:30 not his fault they over booked him, so after freezing all night with small elec heaters, i say f**kit im going to up date my 93 weil for a new 92% and up jobber, well the tech pretty muched talked me out of the new one. he went on to tell me all the problems these new ones are having and how much the replacement parts are and how more frequent they go than my set up, he personally redid his home with a gen 2 H.E. heater and saw only $5 diffrent in his bill than his old heater, and had to replace his blower assembly 2 times at $600 so whats the censes out there from gj crew, any one here see the same as my tech ?

I put a 93% goodman with an electronic air filter in nancys shop. Its going on its second season now w/o a glitch.

I've got a NG fired 93% RUUD, 1/2-way thru it's 3rd heating season and has been absolutely trouble free.
Come to think of it, the previous house had a brand new 93% furnace in it when we bought it in 1995. Sold it in 2008, the furnace guy had been there exactly once in 13 years, to clear a cobweb out of a flame spreader tube that prevented the burner from fully lighting.

High efficiency furnaces have lots of electronics to get the higher efficiency numbers. IT works. They do save fuel, but they also don't come close to the reliability of the old mechanical systems. Repairs of the electronically controlled furnaces are many times higher than repairs on a old mechanical system.
You need to decide on the tradeoff. Burn less fuel and spend more on repairs, or spend more on fuel and less on repairs. Maybe you will be lucky and your new furnace will run troublefree for 5-10 years, or maybe you will be the person who has it die 3 times each heating season. Nobody can predict that.
My house is heated with a 60 year old boiler. It just works year after year, and my furnace man who I have come on once every few years tells me that boilers have made very little improvement in efficiency, so I won't replace it until it dies. Currently, I can heat my house when it is -40 outside for about $3 a day. A new boiler might save me 50 cents a day or 50 cents a week. It will never pay for itself.
Forced air furnaces on the other hand have made great improvements in efficiency, so if your old furnace needs any significant repairs, it is time to think about replacement.
