Hello everyone.

I'm currently rebuilding the front wall of my shop (48' long) so that I can add a couple bigger doors. I live in Michigan and the space will be heated during the winter, so I want the best insulation I can get.

I was planning on going with one of the new doors with the foamed-in-place polyurethane (R-value 15ish), but a couple of the installers I've talked to don't recommend them. They're reasoning is that these new doors aren't built as well as the older style with the sandwiched polystyrene(R-value 9ish).

For you garage door experts among us, what do you think? Right now I'm looking at the WeatherGuard Plus from Amarr, one 10'x9' and one 18'x9'. Any help would be appreciated before I spend $2500 on these doors.

Thanks,
Dave

Look at Amarr's Olympus Model it has an R value of about 15 and is constructed exactly the same as the WG+. Price should be about the same w/in a 100 bucks or so.

I'm in Michigan too, and bought a pair of Taylor steel/foam/steel sandwich 18' x 8' sectional doors when I built my new house and super-insulated attached garage six years ago; they're made in West Branch. I'm very pleased with them, and they really do the job - my garage (2500 sq. ft.) is heated all winter long.

I bought 2 8x9 Steelcraft R16 doors with the injected foam. Installed last summer, they work quite well and look great. Garage was warm all winter and heater barely had to come on. Sounds to me like someone is just set in their ways.

Thanks for the advice. The Amarr Olympus looks like what I will go with, as long as I can get 18x9 and 10x9. I really like the concept of the foam-in-place polyurethane, but the one installer had me a little concerned.

I'll get some pictures up in a few weeks. At the moment the shop only has 8' ceilings, but that will soon become almost 11'. At the same time I will go from 3 8x7 doors to the two mentioned above. Then the fun starts, electric, insulation, drywall... I'm just glad I found this site, it has been great.

Thanks,
Dave
