My wife works at the local High School Career Center and they are always looking for projects to work on. I was thinking of building a metal workbench so I gave them some basic dimensions and asked them to build it for me. As much as I need the welding practice I really feel good about giving these kids this opportunity....

When I was in high school we had a ton of shops. Each seperate with different teachers. 2 auto tech, autobody with paint booth. Huge Metal tech, 2 wood techs and a framing shop. Small engine repair and computer recycling. Some cool projects came out them. Go carts, 5th wheel trailer, 50s truck.

Table looks good. I need to get on making one

I picked it up tonight, the kids offered to paint it but I thought I would do that myself. Took 6 kids to load it in my truck got it home and with the help of a jack was able to unload the 400lb behemoth. I'm so impressed with the job these guys did!! Time for polish and paint!

Awesome bench dude! It's good to see some schools still have shop classes to teach young folks how to make/build/fix stuff:thumbup:

We had electricity, hvac, machining, carpentry, wood working, auto mechanics, and welding when I went (20 years ago). They still have the school, though I'm not sure what they have in it. Most of the kids wouldn't have even finished school if it wasn't vocation school. I went to college, then an electrical apprenticeship, and then got certified in hvac. I still remember some of the things we did in vocation. Plus it let the community get things done that might have been out of there price range. We fixed about 25 cars a quarter for elderly people in our community. I loved it!!!

I work as an Engineer at a Nuclear Power Plant. My main passion, however is working in my shop, rebuilding old cars, fabbing different projects, etc... .I have been blessed with three great kids who have turned into three great adults. One is a teacher, one is in nursing school and one is in a technical school with the goal to be a machinist. From the time they were little kids, they worked with me in the shop in the evenings. I have always tried to teach them that whether they chose to "work with their hands" as a profession, they should respect those who do. These technical (shop) classes in high school give kids who aspire to work in technical fields a leg up, a head start. A less obvious, but just as important benefit, it gives other kids (the lawyers, the nurses, the teachers) an opportunity to develop an appreciation for those who work with their hands. The children of those on this forum are blessed to have parents who can teach this to them, all kids are not this lucky.
