Highest R-Value Garage Doors?

Is there a brand of garage doors that outclasses the rest in terms of R-Value?

How about the sweet spot of R-Value verses price?

I'm thinking in terms of an insulated steel door, but if there is a better material in terms of insulating value, please advise!

Best I could find was an R9 in Ideal or Clopay. But talked a local guy and he got me a Haas with R11 for about $680 for a 10x8

The OverHeadDoor made door I had installed is supposed to be R12. Highest they could go for such a large door (9x18)

I have two OverHeadDoor brand doors that I think are either R12 or R12.5. They didn't do a very good job on the install though so I get a large amount of air around the edges. I need to adjust them at some point.

My Amarr door has a 13.35 R-value....well that's the spec, but I think since I have windows in mine, it's lower than that...probably 9 overall but that's just a guess.

FYI Mine is a Amar Classica 3-layer door (steel outside, foam middle, steel inside)

how much of a price premium is there compared to the standard r-8 and r10 doors? i imagine the hardware/lift/installation price is same regardless, correct?

garaga is iso 9001 certified...for those that like that sort of thing and they have about 4 or 5 lines of doors with r16 and r18 ratings from basic to carriage style. garaga.com

This is all good information but what about price? I am starting a project but would like to see a PRICE!!! on the website and I am not talking about 18x12, just a standard garage door size to get an idea. I know bigger doors and more toys cost more money but just give some sort of idea without having to write or send an email or call to have some sales guy pressure you or not reply back for 2 days. SO if you guys and gals out there could put the size, make, model and price you paid for that door to give some of "us newbies" a guess-tament that would be great.

I had a couple doors replaced this summer due to storm damage.
"OverHead Door" brand
10x10' premium raised panel
full steel wrapped
torsion springs
R12 or 14 I believe

Quoted price was $1200 ea installed, not sure exactly what the final cost was as it was grouped with my final total repair bill.

Looks like Raynor is the clear WINNER when it comes to R-value. If you want a quality door with a high R-value be prepairded to spend a little extra money. But you will make it up in the heat bill.

Also, don't forget about the 30 percent federal income tax credit if you buy it this year or next year. It's a credit, not a deduction and it's on the materials only, not the installation. Lot's of models of insulated doors meet the requirements for the credit.

Can I directly compare R-Values across companies? Seems I read somewhere that each company can rate its stuff and, consequently, the resulting R-Values are only good for comparing different products within a company.

Shoot I need to put the whisker biscuit dealeos back up on my door. There's an 1/8 to 1/4" gap around most of the door. I could feel the air coming in working in there last night when it was -10* outside.
Would stay at 65* in the garage just from the heat the boiler throws off and the un-insulated pipes and now it barely stays 45-50*!

Hmmmm. Well, I have a dillema to tell you about my Clopay door because I still haven't gotten it. Hopefully the pdf I attached will show up, but I ordered this door with Low E glass and triple layer (steel, insulation, steel) with a claimed value of R17 for $1700 installed (prices in your area may varry). This was through a local installer. The problem is, Clopay also supplies Home Depot, so they tend to get priority. I ordered the door 9 weeks ago and I am still getting... "maybe next week". It was by far the best price for the best door I could get. Even and Amar with a vynil back instead of steel was more expensive. Problem is... I can't tell you how nice the door is because I still don't have it. The price isn't that great if you never get the door. Good luck with your decision.

Hey TRC51, I would start making phone calls daily, multiple times a day. My local guy knew what day the doors should be on the truck. It took 2 weeks because they are a non standard size. Otherwise it would have been within the week. 9 Weeks is ridiculous especially right now. Threaten to cancel your order. Not like construction is busy or anything. Start being difficult, I can tell you some inside information. The squeaky wheel does get the grease just to shut em up. Ssssssh don't tell anyone.

Thanks for the advice. I actually did exactly that last Monday. I had enough and somewhat tore the rep a new one. I was calling every week because the rep only picks up once a week. That is why they kept saying... "maybe next week".

The funny thing is, I thought it was my rep, but it turns out Clopay is at fault. I FINALLY told my rep I wanted his order number to Clopay. When I contact Clopay 2 weeks ago, they said 8 - 9 weeks to get my door. So I waited another 2 weeks for the 9 week mark and asked them again where my door was. Then they said 10 - 12 weeks. I was pissed and told them I want a date as to when I could expect my door. They said there is no way for them to give me that date. Are you kidding me? I told them that was completely unacceptable when the rep already had half of my money. My last words to them were "Thanks for nothing... have a great holiday season".

After that I started calling around for prices. Rep was nice enough to offer my deposit back no matter if the door arrived or not if I wanted. So, I called three other installers for prices and lead times that same day. They all were at least $300 more for lower end doors than what I was getting and they were quoting at least 4 weeks + to get the door.

So while I was mulling that over to decide what I wanted to do, I got a call from my installer on Christmas Eve saying I would have a door installed by this Thursday (12/31). I didn't mention it here because I really have not gotten my hopes up. In addition, I would hate to post any positive news only to have to retract it.... again. So lets hope I don't have to post up again on this thread about how I made it to 2010 without a door.

Thanks again for your advice.... you are right, it does work.... I hope. :lol_hitti

I put in a Raynor Therma Seal rated at 16.4 last year. Its a commercial door 10 H x 12 W with three windows with the Raynor Prodigy opener and I love it. Sturdy, tight and warm.

Well, I went with a Raynor Affina with Edgewater panels and colonial windows. $2050 Installed, less $100 rebate and 30% tax credit on the non labor portion.

I got the Amarr 3000 and I got the doors on time. My insulation is the standard steel/polyurathane/steel, but I also stapled and glued cedar with a good sealer to the outside. The cedar added to the R value and the doors look really cool.

I have two Raynors that were purchased on the basis of R value - installation was great and they are an awesome product - they also have a powder coated track and hardware option with nylon rollers which looks great in a finished garage.

I just had the Clopay Premium Steel door installed. Rated at R-17.2. I bought it off a guy who works for a local door dealer but does work on the side, and wants to start his own business. I found him on a bulletin board at the lumber yard where I sourced all the materials to build my garage. Its a 16' X 7.5' door. The cost was $2,150 installed. The price included a Genie screw drive opener with two openers and a key pad. I got a price of $2,700 for a comparable Raynor door and opener from our other local door dealer.

The Clopay door looks great. I had no problems with timing or delivery. I ordered it when I started framing my garage knowing it would be 4 - 6 weeks before would be far enough along in my build to install it. I was told up front the doors were delivered only once each month, and there was a cutoff date a few weeks prior to make the monthly delivery. I ordered it in Late September for a November install. I have no problem recommending this door.

Also, just a friendly request. If you post prices you paid, please also note the size of the door. Its hard to compare prices if you don't know the size of the door.

Here's a link to the Clopay web site: http://www.clopaydoor.com/residential-garage-doors.aspx

Well, happy new year. I got my door installed last night. This seems to be the same premium door as mentioned robortize59 has, but no opener. This is 16 x 8 with low E glass in the windows. $1700 installed. The door looks really good and is obviously well built. Insallers could have done a better job, but it's really not bad. Nylon wheels make it very quite to operate. It will need a opener eventually, but the torsion springs make lifting the 500lb door not TOO bad. This is steel/foam/steel constuction.... it's pretty nice.

TRC51, beautiful door! Seems like a good price, too, for windows and carriage-look hardware.

Now you need a front door with similar windows. :)

:lol_hitti Yeah, I know. I tried to get a man door will similar windows, but believe it or not they did not have one available with the package I bought. I did not want a 6 or 9 light because I didn't want it to be easy to just look right into the garage. I wanted a three square light at the top instead, but couldn't get one. Someday I will swap it out and sell it on craigslist or something.

You know, I was hoping no one would notice. LOL. Guess what just went on the "to do" list.

Been married too long to not notice stuff like that! :pimpflash

Now, let's talk about something important: Who is that Texas Longhorn?

She makes my back teeth ache. :eyecrazy:

Elisha Cuthbert... from the TV show 24. Do a search, but I have to warn you... more than your back teeth will ache if you do.

We got our garage winterized and the cold air was much more apparent at the edges of the door than through the door itself. Try some compressible foam mounted on the wall jambs and head installed to friction fit to the doors.
It made all the difference in heating our garage.
