Not every post needs a off topic response, and some posts are just begging for a response, then maybe a reply or two.

I think 3 should be the limit....after 3, you are sending a thread off track and spoiling the original intent of the thread.

So if there have already been 3 responses that are off topic...start a new thread or just let it go without responding.

Does that seem reasonable and fair?

Seems to happen most often in the WTF threads and the Thread of Awesome. Someone posts a picture, someone comments on something in the picture, someone else has a counterpoint...and pretty soon no one is posting pictures like the original intent of the thread.

That does seem to happen a lot. One guy posts his opinion, then another tells him how wrong he is. I've found on here that opinions have become facts for many people. I think the moderators have their hands full, for sure. Maybe not responding and starting another is a good idea. I've noticed in threads I've started, the same stuff goes on. You ask an opinion of something and it gets derailed into something else. When I asked the question of why are banks such idiots, referring to how dumb the loan officers had acted, it went to "maybe it's my debt, maybe it's my champagne taste on a beer budget", kind of ****. No idea how that answered the question of why the loan officers did and said such crazy things, but it almost always ends up there if a thread gets more than a few responses.

Who knows?
I don't know what you two fellas with those hideous pickups are talking about.

Okay, that would be post one of three and I'm just kidding. Both of your trucks would be welcome in my shop anytime.

And OP, you raise a good point, but sometimes it can be hard to determine the original intent, or at least what exactly is off limits. Most of it does seem to be located in FP though.

I know I've been guilty of doing it myself a few times, but considering that posts to this forum are in some way a mimicry of the flow of a conversation in real life; it's bound to happen I guess.

Real life discussions don't stay on track, either. Making a rule, as such, seems contrived/unrealistic. If the topic/question is strong enough, it'll hold it's own.

I like black licorice!

Black licorice is awful, I recommend red.

What was this thread about again?

On a serious note to the OP, you can't control the internet. Peoples opinions are like………… well you know. There are tons of threads that start out one way and develop in another direction. Sometimes it is a good thing. Most threads that I find end up going way off course were destined for the scrap heap during the typing of the title.

I need snow tires, but I can only afford two.

Do I put them both up front? In back? Both on the right side? Both on the left side?

Please dont suggest opposite corners, because that is just stupid.

It seems like the title asked for it. As I said before, I have an opinion and that is a fact.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Craftsman production is moving to China? Will Craftsman tools still be better than Harbor Freight tools?
