Watching that show "Holmes makes it right" and it looks like all tools they use are Hilti brand. Im sure theyre getting paid to use them or a deal of sorts. I have never seen or used the brand before. Thoughts?

I used a hammer drill or core drill or some mega SDS type drill of theirs. It was just as good as the Milwaukee I also used around the same time.

Hilti makes some of the best out there. Kinda like the snap on guy of construction. If you have a large project going on, they're there as much as you need them. Also depending upon what kinds if fasteners you're using, if you buy enough, the tool(s) are no cost. Hilti fasteners meet most all ansi standards and are typically preapproved in most project specifications which makes preparing submittals a breeze.

They are very popular here with tool hire companies so presumably stand up well to hard use.
Have used their diamond drilling rigs on reinforced concrete a lot in the past.

The fixings are very good too, also their light weight version of unistrut is great to work with, used it a lot for hanging air con units.

The traditional Hilti tools are awesome. Very tough, and made in Europe (Luxembourg).

Used one of their drills years back on a rewire project that involved cutting holes through concrete blocks for waste pipes, and it was way ahead of anything else I'd used!

A word of warning though! I was told that their 'lower end' tools are now made in the Far East! Whether these are half decent tools, or the usual Chinese shite that Hilti have whored out their name for, just be aware that buying a Hilti doesn't necessarily mean you are getting what you think!

In my experience, any sort of hammer drill/SDS has usually been called a "Hilti gun." Must be a reason for that....

I've never heard of any drill being referred to as a "Hilti gun"!

The only tool that seems to be referred to as a "Hilti gun" is anything that drives masonry nails using blank cartridges!

I believe this was the original Hilti tool, and much like any vacuum cleaner is called a Hoover, any such tool seems to be known as a Hilti gun!

Ive hered large hammer drills refered to as hilti guns. Same as groove joimt pliers being refered to as channellocks when channellocks are a brand. Same with adjustables refered to as cresent wrenches.

Haven't watched any of this shows in a while but every tool he used to touch was DeWalt. I'd think DeWalt would be a better fit for residential construction with the wide variety of products they make. Hilti is nice stuff but definitely geared more toward pro use and heavy construction.

Dewalt, hilti, Bosch etc.... are all PRO tools...

For the OP, they make very good tools... We use the sds drills at work to drill out silver tap holes...very strong tools

IME, Hilti offers excellent after sales service. And their specialty fasteners are fantastic.

In the USA, when Hilti tools first started showing up in Home Depot, which I think might have been around 2000 give or take, most of the tools were manufactured in Europe. Basic drills, grinders, hammer drills, and the laser measuring tools were manufactured in Germany, along with some consumables. Some other items including some of the cordless tools and nailers , etc., were from Switzerland. The really expensive rotary hammers, and what might be described as "flagship" tools that had innovative features that weren't common the same type of tool from other manufacturers usually seemed to be manufactured in Liechtenstein. Some cordless tools may have been manufactured in China, but it was a very small portion of the tools.

Home Depot dropped the Hilti tools in store near the end of 2012. By that point "new improved" models of a lot of the tools had been introduced that were priced far closer to what the other professional brands like Milwaukee and Dewalt. Many of the new models had dropped some or all of the innovative features found on the older models. Most of the newer tools were also made in China. The Chinese made tools even included some of the older models like the smaller rotary hammers and powder actuated nailers.

I believe almost all of the cordless tools were by that point made in China, but this supposedly has to do with some joint venture with Panasonic. The prices on the older models Hilti was still manufacturing either stayed the same or went up.

After switching over to the Chinese manufacturing Hilti then parted ways with in store sales at Home Depot, although you can still buy the tools online, and Home Depot still has the best prices I've found.

Some of the higher end tools and accessories are still manufactured in Europe. This includes the ultra expensive stone cutting and grinding tools, breakers, probably and some of the larger rotary hammers. Some of the more expensive angle grinders were still manufactured in Germany. Hilti may have switched suppliers for their laser tools since they just went into some partnership with a specialist in that area, so I have no clue were those are manufactured.

When I checked some of the European sites, some of the flagship tools that had been discontinued in the USA were still being sold, but the prices were sometimes twice what they would now cost in the USA. I've lost a bunch of confidence in the brand, but maybe the Chinese made tools are just as good quality as the older tools.

I have not considered DeWalt to be anything better than the usual tool sold these days since their reincarnation. Good tools, yes, but just another tool. I have Ryobi tools that will match a DeWalt. In fact, some Ryobi is very stout and some not so much. Bosch seems to be holding out a bit from drinking the kool aid.

Hilti was the originator AFAIK. They were there when I started out in 1970. Good that they haven't sold out. As mentioned, they do have good service, Their fasteners are proprietary in most cases so they make money on consumables.

Milwaukee to Hilti:willy_nil

That's like comparing craftsman rp ratchets to snap-ons

Hilti does NOT have user abuse policy
Not our dealer:thumbup:

drop it 40ft, it's covered if it's still under warranty:p

My former company I worked for used to buy a lot of hilti diamond blades every year. Hilti bought out a company named diamond b a few years back. They make very good saw blades so I would tend to believe the rest of their lineup is very strong.

I believe it. I worked at Hector airport in fargo north dakota. I had to deepsaw off the ends of the new runs. They do 16 inch pavement at Hector With a full size walk behind saw I could get through all 16 inches with just three passes with hilti blades. Start with a 14 inch blade. Then jump to a 26 inch blade, then final pass with a 36 inch blade. It was impressive.

Tools - good

Hate having to go thru their 1-800 # when I really just want to talk to the guy behind the counter of the closest store.
