Got about 24 doors to drill for concealed hinges soon. I'll do 1-2 by hand, but thinking I'll get a jig for this.

Any suggestions?

easy to make one with plywood and a drill press

I don't have a drill press. If I did, I'd set the fence and drill off that.

Wood jigs do wear over time, I'm assuming there may be more robust options.

Cmt or the blum eco drill. A used pneumatic hinge boring machine is worth checking for on FBMP, they are occasionally cheap (I picked up 2 for less combined than a cmt jig)

Granted, I haven't been looking for one, but I've never seen one on fbmp
Pretty limited around here, unless a shop goes out of business I wouldn't expect either to show up.

Seems like a bit much for a kitchen's worth of cabinets too, but then again most of my tools are...

I’ve had excellent luck with the Kreg jig as well.

I've got a small pocket hole jig, drawer slide jig and the shelf pin jig, overall OK but not worth the MSRP.

Hesitant to buy another Kreg product. This appears very similar, thought it was metal yesterday but see it's plastic now:

Worth looking, be aware the drill pattern is specific to the hinge type. 45/9.5 is the standard blum and salice. Hettich is 52/5.5, and there are others.

If you have a hinge borer you can use the inserta or logica line of hinges with 8mm dowels.

Searched here and there's one local. All others that come up are over 250 miles away
There's a hettich a few hours away for $500, seems to have been modified and per above is a different size?

Not the right choice...

Way to much for a hettich. I have one it's maybe worth $100 to someone who wants one that's about all. For $500 you can get an old blum. The ganner red barons are usually cheap and work really well, even more if you get one with the 7 spindle line bore head.

For $100 I would probably buy it (assuming it was the right size). For $250 for a blum I wouldn't think too hard either....

IIRC they wanted $30+ per door to bore for hinges. That added up quick...

Assuming 2 hinges per door; I would just make a jig and hand drill the 48 holes. If you are looking to buy a machine and don't have a drill press I'd probably get one of those before a hinge boring machine.

I wasn't looking to buy a machine, but that was the suggestion as they're apparently a dime a dozen

$30/door seems high. Machine setup for your specific hinge offset/backspace takes 10-15 minutes but after that it's 30 seconds a door. I could see a 2 hour minimum at the standard shop rate though. Still cheaper than the 30/door "we don't want to be bothered price."

It's 3 holes per hinge 2 hinges per door minimum so 144 holes.

I must have been thinking one of the other options, boring was only $6 per

I have the Kreg jig linked above and it worked just fine on the 4 doors I made. Will be using it again soon.

Would love to have a dedicated machine if I had more space, mostly for the line boring jig.

I assume you are going to be installing Blum ( or similar -you need a round hole drilled in to back of the cabinet door) self closing hinges on your cabinets. Lowes or Home Depot carries a plastic jig and drill bit kit to bore the hole in the door. I used one a few months ago to mount a new cabinet door in my kitchen. All you need is a drill with the kit. The process is simple and not time consuming. I would make a jig to locate each hole on all the doors in the same position. I believe the kit was under $35. Found it in the aisle with the cabinet hinges.

Just ordered this jig for delivery tomorrow

Came too late to really use it but just took it out of the box and it seems well made/robust.

Clean machining, finish (black powder coat I believe) was consistent and all moving parts move and lock down well. The bit guide even has a circlip and replaceable drill bushings.

Assuming everything lines up to a standard hinge (won't have any until next week) it's a win in my mind
