The only ratchet patent I've been able to find (yet) for a vaguely similar design is 3145594 E.E. Peters assigned to Bonney Forge & Tool & in 1964 (filed 1962).
1964 was also when Bonney was acquired by the Utica Tools Div of Kelsey-Hayes and joined Herbrand (acquired in 1961). These ratchets are pictured and listed in the 1966 Herband catalog as well as pictured in the 1967 Bonney Catalog. However, the component lists for the pictured 1967 Bonney sets describe the newest 1968 patent (filed 1966) Rozmus dual pawl round head ratchets and not the model number of this slightly earlier design.
I've got ratchets in this design branded for Herbrand, Bonney, Bon-e-Con, Dayton, and Vi-Chrome. My guess, if the E.E. Peters patent isn't the appropriate patent for this design, is that if the patent exists it's more likely assigned to either Kelsey-Hayes or maybe Utica and dates from the early to mid 1960's. Just haven't been able to find it (yet).
Who we REALLY need on here is someone who collects (and scans) lots and lots of old tool catalogs!!

When i get a chance tomorrow I'll look up that patent .
I know this rat was made under a lot of different brands and lines but I don't think they were made for too long.
The only other one I had was a Herbrand and it skipped even though it had only moderate wear. It was perfectly clean too. I think the tooth count is too fine for that style of ratchet .

Yeah that's what I've noticed too, several I've seen and a few I have aren't exactly stellar in operation. Wear looks minimal at best, but they skip and slip like they've been hammered on, even after cleaning and re-lubing with a variety of oils/lube. Could be why the Rozmus round head came out so soon after this one - these look far better than they work.
Bonney went through quite a few ratchet designs over the years - kudos to them for being innovative in design, but they sure didn't come through well on reliability, at least not until the Rozmus patent.

Ah you noticed too. That confirms it for me.
I noticed the same thing you did about other Bonney types too. I think a lot of it is from those confounded music wire springs they used. What a pain to try and replace. I remember playing with one for two hrs once trying different lengths of wire and experimenting with coil springs. No go.
Also agree with you on the Rozmus patent rats. Most reliable of all the dual pawl designs . I just wish they weren't so big.
