If your hitch causes more damage to the other vehicle then it maybe isn’t saving them money?

Poor drivers are going to cost their insurance more money either way. If they bump into my hitch and cause themselves more damage, what if they bumped into me without a hitch, and caused themselves less damage, but then they would have to pay to fix my truck. A small bump on my truck can push the bumper into the bedside and cause many thousands in damage. I'm protecting me and mine.

Good point, I was thinking of that last night. Plus they can slightly slope backwards then too to resist falling off the rack.

Similar to how they hang up in the store.

That's how I built mine above. 1/2" dowels at a slight angle. If I had to do it over again, I would have drilled a small hole in the end of each dowel for a hitch pin. This way the hitch wouldn't be able to slide off if there were ever strong vibrations on the wall or anything....

I always keep my drawbar inside, under the seat. Just because, you know, ohio, it'll rust in place in no time.

I would rethink that. In the event of a rollover, it can kill you. At least use a small cable or bike lock to secure it to the seat frame.

What if you back into someone and hit their car with your big protective hitch?

What if … what if…. what if….

An accident is an accident, the presence of a hitch is irrelevant. What a strange thing to be so upset about.

Who’s upset? Just asking a question to a person who says they use their hitch to protect their insurance company from paying out more money than necessary.
Accidents go both ways, sometimes we cause them other times were on the receiving end.

If something gets damaged, I’d rather it be the vehicle I hit or hits me than mine.

So, If I change lanes right in front of you with less than a car length and slam on the brakes it is your fault?
Tough spot but yes, I would say, unless you have proof otherwise.

It's not a scenario I've ever dealt with. Hardly ever drive a four-lane road.

What is an RV style hitch?

I assume they are referring to an equalizer hitch used to pull bumper towed travel trailers. They stick out further than your average ball.

Lots of different kinds, this is just a pic I grabbed online. Some aren't this long.

Funny how that's what people call it now. We used them on all kinds of trailers but especially stock trailers. Called it an equalizer hitch since that's what it does. Never called it a horse hitch!

I’ve never once seen an equalizer or weight distribution hitch used on a stock or horse trailer. That’s strictly RV territory around here.

Yea I believe the correct term is weight distributing hitch.

Not used often enough it seems to me. I see lots of guys running overloaded trailers with too much tongue weight who could really benefit from one.

Whenever someone brings it up in a thread that it is illegal to leave your ball mount in the hitch, I don't remember anyone ever providing the law or statute proving that it's not just a wives-tale

Remember when you were a kid and your dad said it was illegal to drive with the dome light on?

Our trucks tow a trailer 5 or more days a week. We aren't taking the damn hitch out non stop. Everybody I know that grew up around trucks walks around the tailgate of a truck with a wide berth expecting a hitch to be there and not wanting to hit their shin.

Always on the Truck, always ready to go. Fits all my trailers and most of my friends.

It's pretty rural hear. Many, if not most, trucks used for towing (ie: not grocery getters) around here have the ball in the receiver all of the time. I'd never heard of removing it when not in use but I learned in another thread on GJ that there are places where that is frowned on. Kind of inconvenient but if you have a place to stow it and it's available when you need it, removing it is probably not a problem.
Not just frowned on, but illegal, as in PA. (I do not live there, but travel through)

I've always removed mine but I probably tow less than 10 times a year. Once knew a person that was too lazy to remove the ball mount and it quickly rusted in place. Didn't have to worry about it rattling.

Same here, my trucks are used for towing most of the time, hauling the rest of the time. It's pretty rare that it's driven empty unless it's one way to pick up a load. I've never heard of anyone busting their shins on a hitch except when reading about it online. You just naturally walk around it expecting a ball to be there.

I still laugh about my grandpa though. He got his first crew cab and one day he put his tools inside the toolbox across the bed of the truck, then opened the rear drivers side door and climbed clear inside and sat down before realizing he wasn't in the drivers seat. I guess you just get used to what is your normal.

I have this one permanently stored in the cubby hole of under my back seat, just in case. My WDD one sits in the back corner on top of my waste oil 5 gallon bucket with bars behind. This is the case for when I get my superhitch extensions too.

I not sure if my WDD bars will fit in the tongue box too, flatdeck sits at my buddy‘s acreage anyways.
