Have a carrier spilt system. Compressor is 2 years old, system coming up on 20. Cools fine, heats fine, Techs tell me pressures are dead on, I checked Delta-T and it is within spec. It is well maintained. At night it has a beat note to it. I can't tell if the compressor is surging, or it is a beat note between the fan and compressor. About 30 - 40 "notes" or surges a minute. It is not loud but lying in bed it is more annoying than a steady hum or whir. Sort of like a twin aircraft with unsynced props. Any suggestions on any other tests I can run? I was thinking a clamp on current test to see if the current was fluctuating with the note, but I don't know if they are that accurate and fast on reporting changes in current.

Just for a test to see if it pressure related turn thermostat off, with a garden hose soak the condenser coils just from the louver sides. Turn unit back on the water will lower the operating pressures for a few minutes listen for noise. Clamp on amp meter might pic up the amps fluctuating. Meter refresh rate might be in your manual my meter is 3 times a second.
