Did a quick search and couldn't couldn't find anything. Getting ready to purchase wire and breaker to accommodate Hobart 190. From what I gather, I will need 6ga wire and a 50a breaker...? The welder will not be under a serious extended load at anytime.

The manual is a bit confusing but a 10 with a breaker 30 to 50. It actually only requires a 14 but needs to be limited to 30 breaker. If I was never going to use other machines a 12 wire and a 30, a 10/30 makes for custom for this class. The only reason for a 50 is other welders, if you want to use stick buzzer etc.

OP . . . you did leave out IMPORTANT fact . .
. . . How FAR from subpanel is this wiring run ??

If you have 400 ft run . . . it WILL affect the wire size !! :D

Thanks to all who have replied, I will recap what I think I understand...

1. I can run 10 /2 wg and 30A breaker.

2. I do not have the welder yet therefor the only access I could find was a one page spec data from the manufacturer which really was not clear on wire size. My goal is to have the circuit established prior to purchase.

3. Run length is 68 ft

4. seeing how 240V compressor ( future purchase) will be in close proximity, can I use a junction box to create another circuit for the compressor as well to save some $ on wire..? The compressor will never be ran the same time as welder..I just can see running all that wire again if I dont have to...

Run a new wire for the comp. A 10 wire and a 30 breaker is tailor made for that welder.

What he said - run two circuits. Wire isn't that much. If you want to really save $, order your outlets, etc for 240V circuits from Amazon - way, way cheaper than the big box.

If I am going to the effort for air might want it automatic. You can still run a modest comp from the 10/30 circuit. I wired a dozen 5 hp comps before I really realized they call for 8 cable. There are millions of them rated as we did by fla and 125% and they don't trip a 30 breaker.

The only reason to run a wire better than a 12 for this machine is for a different machine which would really require a breaker change.

I had a run of about 50 Ft so I ran #6 with 50A breakers so I can run either my Champion 80 Gal OR my 190 Hobart at any time. The welder wont tax this but the 7.5 HP motor is rated at 38 Amps....

So.. you're saying you have a 7.5HP compressor on a cord and plug?

That welder is only rated for 20.5a @ 30% duty cycle.

So as said above if u wanted to run reduced size wire u can use #14 on a 30a breaker and outlet.

But if u want to use the circuit for other things then do 10/2 on a 30a.

As for the compressor, it depends on the motor's HP rating...

Thanks for everyone's input. I have decided to go 10/2 and 30 amp breaker. Its been a while since Ive posted here and my shop progress stalled out due to a few health issues. I back for the most part now and will try and finish my shop. Good to be back to a site where old school knowledge is readily shared:thumbup:

I always seem to think these little machines need all the help they can get rom the supply. No one thinks the absolute minimums is a real great idea anyway. The connections on the recept and maybe even the breaker are not listed for that small a wire anyway.
