Hey there my name is John I'm in north central Texas about an hour west of Ft Worth. I'm a fire fighter/paramedic & K9 arson dog handler. Just started a shop project on some land we have been sitting on for a few years waiting to get the last kid out of the house. The plan is to build this shop with a small 16x16 guest quarters in it. Once completed we will move everything from our house into the shop including our motorhome. Move into the motorhome and sell our house. Once it sells the plan is to build a new house on this property. So the slab was poured 11/26/18 after 4 months of the pad just sitting there and getting rained on. After the dirt work was done we got a little over 30 inches of rain, it should be good and packed..lol They started hanging steel this Wed. This is a 50x50 with a 10'wide porch that wraps around one corner and extends 35' in one direction and 25' in the other. There is also a 12' wide apron that runs across the front that will have an awning over 30' of it.. I will keep y'all posted as it progresses.. Weather permitting I'm going to try to get started on some electrical tomorrow.

Hi John !!!

That is going to be an amazing shop when it's done. Even though you're a long way from me thank you for doing what you do to keep us all safe.

Please keep posting updates as you have them. I'm looking to build a similar size shop sometime soon and love seeing others ideas.

Looks like a good start. Know what you mean about the rain. A whole summer of nary a drop and then a fall where it felt like it rained every day. I'm glad I got my shop project started in early spring when I did.

Looks good.

Do you want to be on the same site when they build your home? It will be very dirty, dusty and loud while construction is taking place.

We don't mind. I was the general contractor on our last house and did a lot of the work myself. So will be easier being on site. Plus save us a ton of money not having to rent something while we are building.

Looks like you are off to a good start. Stephenville is just right up the road so I know what you mean about rain.

We are down sizing land and house and up sizing shop..lol

Sounds like your priorities are in the right place to me.

I'm digging the colors of your shop... but I might be a bit biased as our shop is similar to yours, but just a bit smaller. (40x50x14)

Nice!

Looks welded, just like mine. Curious spacing on the purlins though. Big gap in the top 1/2

The bottom purlin is turned on its side because the shop is wainscoting. It is a 16' short wall so the other two are spaced evenly. It is welded.

Porches and front awning have been welded up, should have the roof on them and trimmed out by the end of the seek if the weather holds out..

So the doors finally showed up, and we will be able to prep for foam tomorrow. Finished up the electrical today as well... I'm no electrician but not too bad for a fireman..

What are the foam specs?

I'm looking at doing 2" closed cell on roof and walls, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I'm doing 1" closed cell on roof and walls. Good friends with the guy doing he foam, he says 1" is plenty for what I'm doing. I didn't price 2" but I bet its really high.

I’d venture to guess 2” is close to double the price of 1” :)

The space is awesome. Please post pics of the foam. Im hoping to do it as well.

You are correct 2 inches is about double the price and unless your going to condition the space prob really not worth it.. Here are a couple of pics of the foaming.. It was finished today but wasn't able to get any pics today. It will get a shiny new coat of white paint on Monday..

Did they even foam over the I-beams that don't actually touch the sheet steel?

Yea he pretty well covers everything so it all looks the same when its painted.. Its not as thick on those beams but it does have a pretty good dusting of foam.

So got the building foamed and painted.. Took a couple of pics while the paint was still wet, they are kind of funky looking.. Looks much better now that it is dry, will try to take some better ones. Also got a start on framing the two rooms that will be in the back corner of the shop. One is a lawn and garden room 12 x 16 with a 8 x 8 roll up door. Will be able to keep mowers, tillers, weed eaters and general garden stuff in there and out of the way. This room will also serve as my "well house" it will have my pressure tank and a manifold to distribute water around the property. My air comp will also be inside there. The room next to it is a 16 x 16 guest room with full bath that I will also have access to from inside the shop.

I didn't really buy the structure per say, a local builder built it for me. There are several guys in my area that this is all they do. Metal buildings are really popular right now for homes as well, so there is no shortage of builders. I found this guy through a friend that works for him.. Highly recommended if your southwest of Ft Worth looking for someone. No we didn't foam under the porches and awning.. Thought about it but in the end we decided not to. I will say the 1 inch of foam in the building is awesome. It was 28 degrees here in the morning and a couple of hours with a diesel fired torpedo heater running and it was completly comfortable inside with just a hoodie on.

Well haven't been on in a while, have had a ton of other side projects going. Have made a little progress. Finished framing the guest room/bath and lawn and garden room. Built stairs and got the whole thing decked for storage. And wrapped up electrical. Need to run a little plumbing and find someone to sheet rock it..

Very nice. Did they happen to tell you what the spec was on the center main frame I- beam?

Looks like 12 inch.... by 14 lb per foot or 19 lb per foot I wonder?
