Out of my small collection of tools I do not have a pair of hogs ring pliers.
If I do I have never needed them until this day. Had to borrow a pair from the bait shop. It is more fun to work on fishing stuff when your not under the gun as a commercial fisherman, you have time to smell the sea breeze.

Waiting for a response from my SO guy.

All hail the New England Lobster....

You sure you want to spend the money on a set by Snap On? Very salty, deep water. Salt is bad for tools and deep water makes them hard to find when you drop them. Just sayin...

In my experience the two dollars sets from HD work just as well. And at that price it won't kill ya when Poseidon reaches up and snatches out yur hand. :D

Big SNAP-ON fan here...
When it comes to pliers I would go Channellock, SK, etc. Snap-on has great pliers but the others are very good and a whole lot cheaper.

Think you're way over thinking this with Snap On. I'm pretty sure the ones you borrowed weren't Snap On, what else do you want them to do? You load a ring and squeeze the handle, pretty basic stuff. I'd recommend getting straight and angled in some cheap brand, try them out and see which you like better, and them go tool truck if you think you need to. I started out about 30 yrs ago with a cheap kit from JC Whitney with the pliers and an assortment of rings, still have the pliers, added an angled set which I seem to use more often, doing seat covers.

I use my Gearwrench angled pair in the winter quite a bit. Like was said, I just don't see how a better pair could really make a huge difference. That said, the angle is a big deal, I got a set of angled and straight and never use the straight pair.

You can all calm down hog ring pliers are not in the SO catalog.

Not over thinking this just having fun with it.

I got yelled at while at the bait store, I went for fresh mackerel and was told to use the cheap ones for the lobster guys not the ones for the fishermen. My response was I am going to eat the lobsters so feeding them a quality bait is better. Had a fish thrown at me.

My SO guy has a pair he uses from a different vendor, he fishes out of Montauk.
My preference is for a better quality tool, and the feel of SO pliers in particular the electronic versions are incredibly good. Sort of knew that is was not a product carried by SO, as one of the current jokes being shared by myself and my dealer is: he has run out of things that I do not have in my toolbox.
Anybody know what a clamshell bearing remover is?

Following along for some good pliers. I broke my 40 year old JCW hog ring pliers doing chain link fence work last year.

Yes, I know what a clamshell bearing splitter is. I have several different sizes. Do you need to borrow one, or is this a trick question? I am not computer literate enough to post pictures and too lazy to learn. If you Google them, I'm sure there are a plethora of pictures. They are useful in pulling bearings in some situations when more standard pullers won't work, often in conjunction with two or three jaw pullers. They allow pulling bearings without putting all the stress on the outer race. I think you know all of this, and more besides and are just being a smart a--.

Look into Malco for hog ring pliers. That's Malco with an L. They're a very reputable, lesser known USA tool co.

My SO guy is getting me a set, let you know the manufacturer is.

Yes I have clam shell pullers was keeping with the nautical theme, since I had spent a bunch of time cleaning the traps of clams and mussels before using the hog ring pliers.
Clam shell pullers were added to my tool inventory when I acquired a hewland rebuild business.
