Greetings all! Recently started a pole barn garage/shop/entertainment center. I say "entertainment center" because I've seen some kick-back when using a different term that rhymes with "candave". Anyway, my project is a 64x40x18 pole barn from Menards/Midwest Manufacturing. Designed it with a shingle roof, full insulation and a mezzanine over about 1/3 of it.

Currently have no poles in the ground and I'm already 30% over budget. :scared:

In my planning I was visiting the GJ site a lot to try to get a clue and it helped tremendously, so thank you all for this great site!

I hope I can contribute info that ends up being useful to someone to pay it forward!

ha, I will, and I agree pics are very helpful! I'd be glad to start a build thread, but where should I put it? Seems like maybe a separate main category under "General Garage Discussion" for "Builds" would be good to put build threads in?

This would be the reason your over budget. The GJ is the best site to separate you from your money and inform you of tools you didn't even know you needed or wanted.

Good luck with the build and keep us posted.

Thumper: sure you can start a build thread in Garage Gallery, but bear in mind there are thousands of great garages in that thread. the way to keep it on top so maybe you can get more members to see your questions is to post lots of pictures while asking questions. also go in your GJ profile and put the garage link in your SIG LINE. then when you ask questions or post information on other threads some of us reading your posts can just click on the link to find your build thread and maybe help or just give you a little support through your process of building your dream.

good luck and WELCOME!!

Wow that's huge in comparison to my 24 X 48 and yes I'm jealous.

I fully agree with drivesitfar as his recommendations are spot on.

BTW, I too will help you spend your $ on lots of things you do not realize you need. :lol2:

Thanks all! I'll get a build thread going and update my sig line as you recommended.

tjdux: I bought the building during the last day of what I think was their first 11% off sale of the year. I wasn't ready to buy it at that time from a progress standpoint, but I felt I better jump on that deal because that was over $3000 in rebate I'd miss out on. At the time, they told me they'd heard the company was going to run these every so often, but I didn't want to take the chance that the next one would be 6 months later. So, I bought it and it's now sitting in my field. 2 weeks later, they send out another 11% off email and have been having them regularly ever since! ARGH! So i have a bunch of exposed lumber sitting outside since early Feb. not happy about that, but felt I just could not take the chance on missing that amount of savings.

Anyway, it's all good and I'm getting there...

As for why overbudget, it's because everything I forgot about or didn't factor in seems to cost $1000 +/- 10%. Most + 10%, lol. The dirt that came out of the post holes - not reusable as it's super clumpy and hard as a rock, so brought in structural concrete fill to go back into the holes. $1300 unexpected expense. Labor for concrete guy to spread and compact the 1' of structure concrete fill where the slab will go: $980, unplanned expense. it goes on and on.... :)

The good news is that the 11% rebate will pay for the shingles and drywall for the inside. :)
