There is one of these for sale locally and I was wondering if they are the same as the Reed vises? What year were the 104 1/2 vises made? Thanks

Reiv: Holland's didn't # their vises like that as far as i know. Holland's would be a 14.5 for a 4.5 inch wide jaw. Reed made the 104.5 vises i'm guessing in the early 1940's. do you have a bunch of pictures to post of the vises you are talking about?

both Reed and Holland's are very nice old vises.

Sorry, Drives, I think they did use fractions. But I agree that they usually only have 2 digits.

EX: thanks and i'm almost positive Holland's didn't make a 104.5 which is a Reed or maybe a few other model #'s.

nice looking Holland's you have there and is that yours?

ALL: i have a red Holland's 14 that a client sandblasted and then painted red probably because he was watching the vise thread and saw Oldie's "Arrest Me Red" comments. he went a little overboard and it's in line to get the paint stripped and a few coats of BLO when i get time. i sold my bigger Holland's 15 to a member last year or maybe 2 years ago now and I've tried to buy it back from him or trade him for something else and he still likes it because Holland's vises are stout and built to last.

EDIT: I thought my red Holland's was a #14 but it looks like it might be 52 1/2 or something like that as i look at the picture.

It is my Hollands, but I'm not real happy with the restoration. I just recently bought my first angle grinder (a variable speed Metabo) and will very soon touch up all the nicks in the jaws of that Hollands. I just love that new grinder....

BTW, your red Hollands reads 524 1/2 on it

It is on Craig's list, so I don't think I can paste a photo. It is rounded on the top of the slide. It has a rounded anvil shape in the rear away from the jaws above the slide.. In the photos he has shown, it says "Hollands, Erie PA, USA" in block letters vertically and below it has "104 1/2" in larger letters. They are molded in the main body of the vise. The Jaw has a keystone shape molded in it.

Reiv: You are correct and i just keep learning. the vise you are looking at is $150 and is a Holland's 104.5. it's a nice looking vise and pretty clean. that's on the top end i'd pay for a 4.5 inch vise, but i own more than a few so if you need a vise you have my vote to negotiate or buy it.

here's the pictures for your thread.

any questions??

Ex: thanks for seeing my picture and figuring out the # on the side of my red Holland's.

Yeah.....It is on the upper end, but if it stays there a while I might try an offer. If he is tired of fooling with it he may come down. I don't really need it that bad, but is really nice and no new one in that price range can come close to it and would be made by someone on a rice diet if you know what I mean.

Reiv: i didn't say it isn't worth $150 so even if you had to pay that much for it your thinking is sound because it is a much better vise than you can buy for that much in a new vise. while you are waiting to see if the price moves down keep your eyes open for a Reed, Rock Island, Prentiss and many other old vise company's vises. just a tip if you are buying an old vise make sure to check for cracks, repairs, welds and missing parts.

I started a broken vises thread to show a few of the issues some of the old vises had if their owners didn't use them correctly and here's the link. if you find a vise that qualifies to be on this thread just post it because it will help others.

good luck

just an FYI the rice diet isn't bad and those guys can make better steel than anybody if the importers would pay for that quality which they don't usually. unfortunately most of our factories here are gone now for one reason or another so finding a good solution would be nice for the future.
