Recently acquired my grandpas hollands 27 from his estate. Story has it came from the railroad back in the day, for the past 60 years it has been attached to a steel post concerted in the ground in what used to be a small workshop until a tornado took the building about 20 years ago leaving nothing but the vise standing. Its been used and abused one jaw is missing its face, the base is broken and missing and has more hammer and saw marks than you could count. Anew base is in the works as soon as I have some free time on the mill I plan to build back up most of the broke off corners and get it back serviceable. Does anyone have any good process for weld repairs? my initial plan was to TIG braze the spots back up with aluminum bronze rods but would like to hear from someone who has actually done it with success.

Great vise, story and heritage !
I think the holiday and adverse weather may have some of the folks busy, but give it time.
It sounds like you have the required knowledge and skill for the TIG brazing repairs.
Research the vise repair threads and search for Kevin Scott’s tips for which particular filler rods are best given the age and type of structures you are attempting to restore.
I know there are many there, you just have to dredge them up. Good luck and keep us posted!

Stay safe,

Shawn

I’ve got it mostly finished up. New base made along with handle and the lock screws for the swivel. Ran out of argon doing the repair but pretty close to finished just need to make a hard jaw for the dynamic and braze it on and it will be finished.
