Hollands 53 1/2

Couple weeks ago I put an ad in local newspaper I was interested to buy an old vise. as a result I purchased a Charles Parker 955 and Craftsman 05196. Today another lady offered me a Hollands 53 1/2. I have not seen her vise yet. She is asking $50.

Having learned my lesson with the Parker where jaws are $225, I looked online for jaws for the hollands in case the jaws are bad . I couldn't find any though. Do they not exist?

How heavy is the vise? is the price ok?

The two Holland vises I have had both had cast-in jaws.

That said, there were very well-made vises, as nice as any I have seen. They are under-rated, IMO.

In a previous post I found an old catalog page. Looks like the 53 is a combination vise with 4.5 inch jaws and weighs 78 pounds. It is in the lower left corner of the catalog page.

If the pipe jaws are still there I would think that vise is a definite buy.

Yeah, I still find it to be the most efficient way to get good dealslocally.

So I picked up the hollands. It's complete, jaws seem fine. but it's all rusted up and stuck, it won't move.

A little lubrication in the right places goes a long way. I bought a Hollands 56 for $50 a year or so ago. It has 6" wide jaws and probably weighs around 150 lbs. It is pretty rusted, but moves smoothly. It is overbuilt in just about every way imaginable. If I see another Hollands, I plan to buy it!

Not much luck with wd40 so far. I guess the next step will be a coke bath. It's the slide that's rusted in.

The sign says 53 1/2 H. Any clue what H stands for?

Rather than WD I'd use a penetrating oil, PB Blaster is a popular one. Or, ATF works well if you have some around, maybe mixed with acetone.

Grandpa just suggested liquid wrench. Any opinions?

Certainly better than WD. I haven't done testing to see what works best, I'm sure someone has though.

With cheaper fuel now, OP you can just put whole vise in bucket of diesel fuel.

Get some wire wool on the exposed portions of the slide, to clear any surface rust off, then lather it with either water, (it gets into nooks and crannies better than any other fluid, and whilst ever everything is kept sopping wet, it is providing some small amount of lubrication), else some lubricant, and tap the slide backwards and forwards alternately with a rubber mallet.

Grandpa ended up pulling out a heating torch and that did the job. Now the restoration can begin. I think red would look nice on this vise.
