I was wondering if anyone has any information on this vise. Just wondering as to what year this particular model may have been made. Any info would be great. Thanks Bill

Not a Hollands expert by any means, but know they are great vises. They have been linked to Reed because of similarities, but nothing definitive ever to show they were together at any point in time.

I don't recall exactly when Hollands started, either in the 1890's or early 1900's. I know even less when they stopped making vises, my guess would be early 1940's to late 50's

Kabasa: sorry i can't tell you much about your Holland's exact age other than i think it's prior to WWII and probably from around 1930's.

i'm not sure when Yost vise company took them over, but thinking just after WWII.

your vise looks pretty clean and the #24 stands for 2 (swivel base) and 4 is 4 inch wide jaws. is there a chunk out of the back of the dynamic slide in picture #3 or is it just a blurry picture?

also welcome to GJ and our forum.

Langs: where did you get yours? i'm guessing it weighs about 125 pounds and has a 6 inch wide jaw. yes? looks like if you just clean it up and if you have a solid bench or stand that vise should be all the vise you'll ever need.

Steve: how wide are the jaws on your #53? i'm guessing 3 inches cause i'm thinking the 5 for the first # represents a combo vise cause yours has pipe jaws. i like your Craftsman made by Rock Island too cause it's a very well built vise.

You can’t size all Hollands like that. The 53 has 4” jaws and the 53-1/2 H has 4.5” jaws.

Hollands 53 1/2 H

93 lbs. 4-1/2” jaw width. 5” opening. 5” throat depth. Reversible pipe jaws. Swivel base that isn’t a thru bench mount.

If someone hasn't already mentioned. Hollands put a date at the front, underneath the Dynamic ( in some cases)

Hollands, Reed and Erie Tool were all in operation at the same time within a few square miles of each other on Erie's west side. And also just down the street from Hollands was Griswold cast iron cookery- 6 blocks west of Hollands foundry on Erie's West 12th st. Erie Tool Works was on W 12 as well- about 4 blocks from Hollands and 2 blocks east of Griswold. Reed was about 6 blocks north of Erie on W 8 street about 2 blocks further west. 41 miles to the south in Meadville was Yost and Channellock- and 50 miles to the east was Crescent and JP Danielson. Lots of iron in the Northwest quadrant of PA- Western NY

This old thread won’t get many lookers so if you’d like to re post this in the big vise thread you might get some added information if you haven’t posted there already.

Hollands began manufacturing vises in 1887. Here is a page from a Hollands catalog that lists your vise, but I don't know the year.
