I was in a high-end RV repair facility today, spotted this and thought I'd share it with the GJ community. The tech proudly told me it was all paid for- he puts in a lot of 12-hour days and wanted a workspace he could be proud of...

Let the love/hate fest begin...

What would a set up like that cost? I've been seeing a lot of fancy tool boxes on trailers and tow trucks the last couple weeks for some reason.

About $36,000.. It looks to be two KRL1023 boxes with a KRL1012 short side cabinet and a tall KRL1098 cabinet with the older workcenter and overhead. The left one seems to be older, it has the older wheels anyway. Those are tall bottom boxes 46 inches tall 73 inches wide and 30 inches deep..

Some nice setup for sure.

The whole setup can probably be duplicated for around 20k. The 1023's can be had for under 6k each, call it 2.5k for the side cab, 2.5 for the locker and 3 for the two risers. Thats real world prices, not retail.

I'm with y'all. I would've spent the money on cheaper tools and boxes and bought new bought or truck. But regardless, I wish i could have the same set up.

I too rather have a number of other toys rather than have $100k into a box filled with tools that sits at a my work. I know working on motorhomes you really need to be a jack of all trades but I never was able to justify spending big money on a Snap-on or Mac tool that I might use twice a year. When I was in a shop I was content with my Snap-on classic 78 and a mixture of Craftsman, Snap-on, Cornwell and Harbor Freight. I was working to make money in order to live and enjoy life, not dump it into my job. I already had a student loan for that. Funny thing was when I made the jump to field service they would buy tools for us. In the shop I had to buy everything except a creeper.

This might be the key, and possibly a solid reason for owning that setup. To a non technical customer that could be reassurance that their money is well spent. Instead of walking past a box that you see on your weekend trip to Harbor Freight.

I don't think anyone truly hates snap on or any other high end brands. It's just overpriced (in my opinion for the main line stuff). Hey, if you want to spend the money you go ahead but if it means you eat ramen noodles and bum rides while you wait for the money to fix your toyota tercel then don't complain about it.

Sorry to ramen noodle lovers but not tercel owners.:3gears:

I'd like to see what's in the drawers to tell you the truth. I don't know no one that only uses snap on down to the socks (hehehe).

I assume one drawer is for snacks?

All it needs is a fridge, hot plate, a pull-down bed shelf and you don't need to go home!

The head tech at my old shop had Snap On everything when he was younger. He had about 60k in service tools and he lost all of it in a divorce that involved a murderous fire. He rebuilt his tool collection from the ground up with primarily high quality non Snap On tools and had slowly been transitioning into having mostly SO tools when he bought the business next door. But the guy pretty much only spends his money on tools and motorcycles

Wow a guy spends his money as he feels fit and everybody is critical of his financial decisions. I bet 20 years from now that box will be worth more than your new truck and bass boat. How's that for fiscal sense.

One man looks at something like a set of tools or fleet of trucks or a manufacturing facility and says "Wow! that's going to cost a lot". Another sees the same thing and says "Wow! that's going to make a lot".

Neither one is wrong, but these two are going to lead very different lives.

Yes, the first one will retire early with his first nickle and the latter will always be in debt.

You sure about that? Considering how none of you have any idea how much the guy makes

And a coworker just brought a used me big off the truck. He paid 7 for it with stainless stop tops. Don't judge a book by its cover

how can he be in doubt when he said it was paid for?

People spend their money on different vises drugs, alcohol, cars I personally spend mine on my fishing I can get way higher on fishing and fishing gear then I can on drugs.

My shop burnt down last year and I lost a good portion of tools so I have spent my fishing money on tools to replace what I lost and I am not in doubt...... well I wasn't till last week but I plan on paying off the box in the next few months.

How much Snap-on do you own?:D

I have some, along dozens of other brands. People want to say he is wasting his money to me a 45k truck and 25k boat that in 10 years will be worth 10k seems a lot dumber than something that costk 18k and will probably pull 10 to 12 k in 10 years.
But I'm very happy with my 25 year old truck and my old flat bottom boat

How about you?

Not necessarily. ALL of my tools and equipment are paid for and I have never had any debt related to tools or equipment. If I didn't have the money for them, I saved up until I did and I buy high end tools, not HF. No offense to those who own HF, I just choose not to.

That said, my tools have made me more money than I have invested in them and I have a HUGE investment in tools and equipment. My tools and equipment ARE the reason I have no mortgage nor debt in my life and will be able to retire early.

Looking at a person's assets/possessions and making a quick judgement based on your own personal opinions says more about you than it does about him.

I own one Snap-on 24" 3/8" extension. The rest are HF, Craftsman and similar. I also do not own a motorhome or boat, though I do own a motorcycle and sporty car.

Tools are investments in a profession, not in and of themselves investments in general. Like most other things you will never get what you paid for out of them. Owning Snap-on, for some, is a badge of pride much more than a necessity!

UPS can't sell a truck for what they paid for it, Delta can't sell a plane for what they paid for it. These purchases are not made to re-sell, they are made to make money.
As a business owner it didn't take me long to figure out that cheap tools cost you more than expensive ones in the long run.

Boy, ain't that the truth???

I watch some of my co-workers struggle to remove a bolt with a rounded off head because the cheap wrench or use a low powered pneumatic gun to remove wheels and then piss and moan when they can't hit the time requirements. One of the worse ones was a broken piece of **** tap that took more time to remove than the whole job paid.

and that's why I work on my RV myself... you can spend more on maintenance costs than the RV is worth.

That is an awesome setup, the nicest I have ever seen was in New Jersey. I got to talking to a gentleman I met at the Thompson speedway swap meet, he had a bunch of gto parts and I told him I was restoring a 65 convertible and he said he had a "brand new" trip power setup {WHICH I NEEDED}, after explaining that it was bought by an old dealership, it was in 5 boxes and he had it all. He wanted $6K for it so I wanted to take a look at it..

Fast forward 2 weeks I pull up to a hot rod garage about 6 hours from my house in New Jersey. He led me into his garage that was about 2500 sq feet nothing crazy but SUPER CLEAN AND NICE. Sure enough he had a complete tri power which I ended up buying for $4500 that day. BUT I seen his tool box and lost my breath!!! He had 12 pieces just on the bottom, he obviously had OCD, all the boxes were green, the boxes with sae tools had red trim the boxes with metric had black, he had 3 boxes of screw drivers, phillips in one, flat in another, and torx, hex, prys, ect in another!!!! It was insane, he opened a few drawers and it was loaded and perfectly designed..

I had to ask what he had invested and he said just the boxes were were $120K, then years and years of buying tools, he had it insured for $500K, he also told me he has been spending no less than $300 per week for 25 years!!! And when he bought boxes he never used so credit he paid cash for them, so that just in tools $300+ for 25 years every week...

It was insane, he had a mohawk lift, down draft paint booth, rotisserie lift, he also had the coolest ceiling rail system I ever seen with power hoists all of it, he could take an engine from his little clean engine building room and move it to the lift by for installation ust by hitting a button and walking it over!!!

I was impressed, I told him it was the perfect hot rod shop and he said, "no, I need a pair of dynos {engine and wheel}, 1 more lift, and sealed room for body work" But he said he was getting old and wasn't going to spend much more money on the building...

Anyway I was floored it was crazy and the trip power worked AWESOME, I sold that car to a guy from ebay for $79K, I swear having the boxes to the new oem tri power setup sold the car for me, and all them years in that box I didn't have to change one seal in that kit, everything was still good!!!
