I have a contractor grade Goodman 5 ton in Mesa, AZ. It has been having issues lately. Have had 5 service calls in last 1.5 months. I figure the stress of 110 F weather is showing me the weakness in my 7 year old system. Looking at replacement sooner rather than later. With an 85 year old MIL and pets having the a/c go out is not a good thing. Have not bought a house A/C in many years. What are some sturdy units for extreme heat? Are name brands like Trane and York the go to? Thanks!

I’ve had good results with Trane, however it’s all been with commercial units. No resi experience here.

But just this morning on my way to the shop (Avondale) I heard a HVAC commercial that cracked me up. They were offering a new system for about 11k with 6.9% financing with.....you ready for this, 180 month plan. I thought holy ****, how many times are you going to pay for this?

What were the service calls for? 5 calls in 6 weeks could indicate need of a new "servicer" rather than a new unit.

Same problem. House does not cool to set temp. 80*. Also had a bad capacitor. Three different service companies. I trust two. Got rid of the first one. Total rip off. I was on vacation when it happened and my wife could not reach me. Had my preferred outfit out today. He thinks the control is the issue. Something about a signal from the air handler. Did not know we had one. Said it was in the attic. I thought just the outside and inside unit with coil and blower in there.

Shoot, my 8 year old Tempstar R-22 system was struggling at 110 last week but kept the house at 78. Had to run alot - and put ALOT of water out the condensate line - but still!

Your 7 year old system must be a R410a unit, and most all of the newer higher efficiency models need virtually perfect airflow to perform to spec. Did the company then do a airflow calc on your ductwork? If not (not many companies do), then it'll work on normal days but high load days will show deficiencies quick.

measure the air temp by the intake grill, and the air coming out of the nearest duct to the inside unit. See what the temperature difference is. Also they probably checked but are the filter(s) clean?

After all the service calls I found the problem Friday night. The water sensor was faulting. The condensate line was plugged at the drip loop. I replaced the line from the unit to the wall. Now the sensor will not reset. I dried it out per instructions but no joy. I cleaned and checked the primary and secondary drip pans. I watched the pan that the sensor is in for over four hours and not one drop got in there. Anyone know of a better unit than this one?

It is a 410a unit. Not a quality one I think. Or badly installed.

X2, especially on a <10 year old system.

I'm also fond of Trane, BTW.

Would agree it's lousy service and that the relatively "middle aged" system is salvageable..........Trane's "ok", but I'm geo-thermal these days (Bosch Systems).........

My insurance company made me put the same stupid condensate sensors in my AC unit. Same exact brand.

Thought it was silly, but made a nice discount on my home insurance bundled with some other things, so I had them professionally installed and just about the first time I used the AC, it tripped the sensor and shut my AC down. Condensate was not clogged.

Relative had same brand for same reason, same experience. Shut down his AC.

We both disconnected them and haven't had an issue since. Just make sure your condensate line is clear.
