i had my fall tune up on ac/heating unit and was told a few things
my fan relay switch is stuck casing fan to always blow air thru vents at all times ( yes it does) was told 886.00 to replace control board as relay was part of board

was told i have mold in upstairs unit over garage and need a uv light to kill mold cost 489.00

was told i have 2 capacitors going bad one on outside unit258.00 inside unit 206.00

all this seems high priced
unit is a heil which is 10 yr old, since 2004 i have replaced outside unit fan twice
other than that no problems
so i am asking ....do i really need all this done ?
is the price high ?
do i need a 2nd opinion? i think so
should i wait until unit actually gives me trouble ? i think so ...

Yellow box what part of the world are you in ? The prices seem quite high to me and I own an HVACcompany :D. On a Heil unit the board shouldnt be more than $350.00-$400.00 installed . You can get the UV light at Homie Desperate and install it yourself around $100.00-$150.00 . The Capacitors are WAAAAAAAY out of line . I average $50.00-$125.00 per capacitor :D.

95% of the companies out there use " system checkups " as sales tools to boost their bottom line if you dont mind me asking how much was the " checkup " .

YES, and YES to both of the above!

From what you have said so far, it sounds like you found yourself a "Price Gouging Parts Changer" Now I'm only basing this on his estimate for the capacitors, which are a 15-20 dollar item, (if you buy them yourself)! I wonder if he took the time (as he was making his reservations for his trip to the bahamas), to check the thermostat, and wiring to it for your fan runs 24/7 problem? Word of mouth is your best bet to find a good Company, as their Reputation follows, and preceeds them! If you contact your local RSES (refrigeration service engineers society) chapter, they can probably help you in your search!

Good luck,

Wayne

I won't comment on the pricing, but how was the presence of mold determined?

Was a test performed?

Is the person looking at it qualified to identify mold specimens on sight?

Did you see this suspected biological growth?

If you can't answer any of this plainly and clearly, then I believe you have reason to seek a second opinion.

Sounds like a gouge to me. Just replaced the control board in ours, Mfgr wanted $158 wholesale, (which would be #300-400 installed?). Found it online, exact replacement, $48.
