With all the talk regarding the Cree LED lights at Costco I was wondering if anyone has used/reviewed this option:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Commerci...ERCH=RV-_-rv_homepage_rr-_-NA-_-205331022-_-N

Looks like Home Depot just dropped the price to $39.98 per fixture. They are 3200 Lumens each and use 36 watts of power. Looks like you can connect up to 9 fixtures off of 1 - 110 Volt outlet using the supplied linking cable.

Specs: http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/cd/cd32297c-84a0-4bec-911b-7467fe84d897.pdf

I am looking to redo the lighting in my 34' x 26' / 9' ceiling garage.

Thoughts....Opinions....Etc...??

Subscribing as I really like that they have pull strings. Nice warranty as well... 5 years.

Ronr80: are these hardwire or plug in?

Just like the posts.......Think it comes right back to lumens per watt for the price paid.

I don't want to speak for anyone else, but the pics look like there is a "mickey mouse" shaped receptacle on the fixture in the HD pics. I would assume there's probably a cord that plugs into it.

Direct from one of the questions asked on Home Depot's site:

"The plug is a 3 prong.
On another note, it comes with a add on cord so you can add up to 8 more of these lights in a row. All plugged into one outlet."

Meh.

Fluorescents are proven technology. LED reliability is highly variable depending on the specific model and maker. And when fluorescent bulb goes bad, you'll be able to replace it with an identical one. Not so with these fixtures which will be long since discontinued in a year or two.

Cree is a known quality brand for LES lights.
For the same price I think I would rather have their product

Just tried to get some of these, they seem to have "come and gone".... First link above is a dead link now, and my local HD, who had some a week ago knows nothing about them now. There is however a $99.00 (They must be joking!) alternative there that is linkable.....

Are you kidding? I got mine today and was pretty impressed with the output. I want to reorder 4 or 5 more. I'll look around some more, Artie

Jeff,
Did you know when you see a Yellow price sticker on the shelf for the item above at Home Depot it means its a clearance item that they will no long carry anymore. Do you remember if these fixtures had a yellow SKU sticker?

I'm using all LED in our new house, and so far I love them, but- there are two issues. One is that they are rapidly evolving, which means they may soon be obsolete for one reason or another. Secondly, I had one taken out by a lightning strike, and it wasn't even on at the time. The lightning must have energized the neutral or ground. I've never had a regular light damaged by lightning. So much for the '30 year lifespan'.

We bought 6 retrofit can lights to try them out. By the time I went back to get more, they had come out with a newer model, which didn't match the ones we already had. Since it is in a house, we wanted them to match. This happened in a period of months.

Don't get me wrong- I love them, and would like to put them in my shop, but there are potential problems.

Incandescent bulb replacement with LED is a whole different subject than T8 tube to LED.

The bulb costs, light output, bulb quality and electrical costs savings are not the same.

All of that is true. My point was that things are changing rapidly, and they are apparently more sensitive to power spikes. Not sure what I'm going to put up in the shop yet.

You may want to look at T8 led lights. We just got a quote the other day at work and each T8 led light was $14.50. Do the math, can replace a 4 tube fixture for $60.

And the math still might not work........lumens per watt comparison and per bulb cost still can make the pay back ify.
Then there is the unknown bulb life issue in these new found cheap bulbs......

Apparently no more of these are available, at least for now. Several of my shop buddies were very interested. My plan was to use them for a trouble light.
We're looking around for a similar fixture and found some cylinder led shop lights.
Any recommendations in that direction? 40.00 maximum, 4' , LED? What you all think?
