If you have access to the customer use computers at the store, and you find something you think might be a penny, go to the computer and look up the SKU.

If it returns no results yet you are physically holding the item, it just might be a penny.

For the actual purchase of penny items, it helps to use self checkout when it is busy (i.e. a nice weekend day) Only one cashier to try and keep track of 4 self checkout kiosks greatly improves your chances. Ive even been quick enough to buy a penny item with my credit card (didnt have any change on me!) and the self checkout monitor person standing 2 feet behind me. She even came over after I paid to deactivate the magnet in the package....all the while never knowing how much (little?) I paid for it.

If you want a kind-of play by play I almost always price check a few misc yellow tag items first, both to gauge the self check out cashiers interest in what I'm up to and to see if anything is tagged wrong. I then grab the potential penny item, price check it to make sure (I've never had a yellow tag on anything I've bought, I just scan the normal barcode), and then quickly buy it and leave the store.

So are you just scanning the penny item using the regular barcode like any other item, or are you doing price check > then add to purchase?

The reason I'm asking is, the only time I ever found a penny item at my store, I scanned the barcode (not the yellow tag) and immediately on the screen it says "Please wait for attendant", so I got screwed out of it. Others have suggested doing a price check on it, then "add to purchase" or something along that line. I have yet to try it.

On another note, what's the deal with the older blue Ryobi items having the same SKU number as the newer green models?

Are the bar codes the same? I found some blue models but when I look up the SKU on the price check app, it shows the newer model. I should have tried scanning it in self-checkout.

I have had the pro desk guys reduce those "blue" tools with the same SKU by over 50%

Somewhere in these 101 pages of posts I'm sure it says what to look for in HD for deals. Do I just cruise the aisles looking for the yellow tags or is there something else to look for?

I'll tell you as long as you're not from the Portsmouth, Rochester, or Concord areas of New Hampshire. lol

Honestly, the stores in NH are run pretty well, so deals are very hard to find. I'd like to take a trip to some crappy city like Lynn, Mass. I bet there's tons of jewels to find in HD's in sketchy cities.

I've done both. If I know 100% that it will ring up a penny I don't price check it.

I've never gotten a "Please wait for attendant" message from a penny item before. I assume you could just ring up the item if you know it's a penny and then if you end up being wrong just remove it somehow.

When it said "Please wait for attendant" I was basically locked out of the system until the attendant fixed it. I couldn't do anything on the screen.

Although, I could have just took everything and walked away to shop more, then tried again later...

Was it an older item that may have been taken out of the system?

I hope it's not a new thing they're doing as it would certainly stop a lot of penny deals from happening.

^Could you possibly move your conversation to private message? Not to be a **** but this thread is already really long with just the on-topic posts.

Not to be a **** but if you would read anything in this thread this is addressed every two pages. That would cut down on the reposts and the Lord knows there are already way too many of those.

Scan the UPC... Not barcode on the homedepot prices tags as it is NOT the UPC.

As I stated, I did scan the UPC and it set off the "wait for attendant" alarm

Edit: btw that was sarcasm what I said about HomeDepotRob.

Maybe your store has their SCO programmed to show that alert if any penny item is scanned. I would guess it is a store-by-store decision on how to program their SCO regarding penny items.

Probably. And probably the same reason why I stopped seeing clearance items for a penny in the price check app about a month and a half ago. I used to see them, but now the only things showing up for a penny is old holiday decorations that don't have the yellow clearance status.

Thanks for clearing that up, I've never had a HD price tag on any of my penny items. Guess that explains how I never get the "Wait for attendant" message.

Mixed reviews. No depth adjustment. Something about no different way to trigger.

Last night I was in my "one and only HD" store and took notice of the color change with Ryobi products from the blue to the lime green. I had only seen a couple items on the shelf in blue, nothing any good, but when I "self checked" the prices they were still ringing up at full price & had no yellow tag on the shelves. Have others seen the old blue items still at full price? Are the old blue items suppose to be all gone by now? I noticed a couple items which still had the blue display Ryobi units and yet the new green ones stocked on the shelves.

I find it odd that they wouldn't have provided replacement "display units" at the same time of stocking the new color scheme.

Well I did notice that newer green models haven't come out for some of the products... such as the Ryobi cordless cutout tool (like a Rotozip), a cordless handheld vac, and I think some 6" corded buffer/sander.

From what I've noticed the green models with a new part number (are usually upgraded in some way) have been put out on display.

The green models with the same part number (color change only) is kind of store dependent on whether or not they get put out.

Local store is still selling the blue version of the Ryobi caulk gun. I thought that had been long discontinued and replaced with the green version. The only difference between the ttwo seems to be the color.
