In addition to having the regular PCs, my store has a dedicated customer's computer at a stand-alone kiosk, right in the middle aisle that goes across the store. not the aisle in the front, the one in the back. in my store it was located by the plumbing/bathroom special order desk.

the kiosk has a giant green arrow hanging from the ceiling that points down to the computer. the arrow is something like 4-feet tall. it's so huge and so high up that you can't even see it unless you're far away. while I was using the terminal I didn't even know it was hanging over my head. several customers came up to me asking for help. everyone thought that i had to be an employee because i was working at a computer. the employees didn't seem to mind -- couple of them said hello as they walked by.

too bad you have to be in-house to access the server. it would be great if we could access the system from home...

Someone is working on a way to access it at home.

Something weird just happened to me a few minutes ago at HD. I found two items that were a penny. Went through self checkout. Everything scanned at a penny. I proceeded to pay and dropped in a dime to the machine. So I stand there waiting for my 8 cents change and receipt to spit out. NADA. Instead a message "please wait for attendant" popped up on the screen. She tried to claim it was a computer error and that I am not allowed to buy those items. I called her out on her BS story and demanded to see a manager. Manager came over and instantly agreed that I am entitled to the penny items. She pushed some button on the main computer, and the change/receipt dispensed,

Anyway, I have never seen that "please wait for attendant" appear after actually paying for the penny item before.

Please excuse my ignorance, because I am just learning about this awesome world of how clearance items work and I want nothing more than to take advantage of it. I know it can vary due to the person you work with, but how does the process usually work when you show a sales associate a screenshot of a clearance item? Is this only for a limited time? My first time trying yesterday and they asked me to either have an actual print out ad or give them the store that the clearance item was at. I was able to find the store number based off of the screenshot after I looked for a bit and when I called the store to see if they still have the item listed at that price the person could not find it. You guys have me reading this thread everyday and stopping by Home Depot at least 2-3 times a week to just cruise the isles. Even if someone could provide a link to where it details the process I would be eternally grateful because I have spent a bunch of time searching the thread and I haven't found anything solid yet. I want to start contributing too because like I said, this thread is just awesome. Thank you

I would appreciate any info that you guys have on this as well. I went into Home Depot today but had no clue what I was looking for.

this could be a deal for anyone needing it. If you see it, you could buy it right away, or wait a few weeks for it to drop to 1 penny.

They can and will ban you from the stores if they want. I caused all kinds of havoc with HD in 2010. Plenty of managers got a talking to after a ton of penny items went out the door.

The 4 gallon backpack sprayer from their April Black Friday promo was .01 this A.M. when I was there.
My first penny item.
It was still marked with an ??.06 price and I went to scan it seeing if it was ??.03 and was shocked when it read .01.

Anyway, I have never seen that "please wait for attendant" appear after actually paying for the penny item before.

i once saw it after the payment when the item was some form of knife (yes a utility knife even) that required age verification. But for penny items it always used to happen at the time of the individual item being scanned.

i haven't seen it when scanningn penny items in quite some time, so maybe they have changed the checkout software.

I also had a case recently when the price checker at the pro desk showed .03 pricing (in store) but it rang up a penny at the register. It caught me off guard when it came up as a penny. Would have done SCO if I had known.

Can you guys start a different thread for this penny stuff? It is really clogging up this deals thread, especially when we get daily reports of what everyone did and did not find for a penny. Make a separate thread for it and go wild with it if you want.

After you paid? I would have just walked. So what if you let them "keep the change" (I know it throws off the deal because each item cost you 5 cents instead of 1....)

Isn't this the Home Depot "clearance" thread? Penny deals are clearance items.

Yeah, the "please wait for attendant" message showed up only after I paid the machine. I thought about walking put, but then I would not have any receipt to prove I paid. And the machine screen said I still owned money even after I inserted my payment. Oh well that home depot (San Diego, CA) was very far away from my city (Glendale CA), so its unlikely I will ever be going there reveryday. I was just visiting family.

Yes it is. So you enjoy reading posts from people that go to 10 different home depots every single day and report what they got and what they didn't? That warrants a separate thread, period. I mean, if you want to follow what is going on in one of 7 particular stores then go ahead -- it is a waste of time for everyone else.

Make it a separate thread and do whatever you want there.

I've posted a lot of deals in the past few months. I also enjoy reading up on what to look out for (penny deals, good clearance). When's the last time you posted a deal?

I've noticed a few people who come and complain about having to read too much to find all the deals here, but they don't contribute anything themselves.

I don't mean to give you ****, but either start contributing or you have no right to complain. The people doing the majority of the work on this thread aren't here just to please you.

I just spoke with HD customer care. Print this out and take it with you if you are hunting for penny deals. Show it to any cashier who tries to deny your purchase:

"Hello Mr. xxxxx,

I am sorry for the troubles you've experienced at your local Home Depot
store. I can understand how frustrating this was for you, and I will be
more than happy to address this matter.

With regards to your concerns, once our items have been "clearanced
out", they will show in our system at a price of $0.01. As part of the
Clearance process, the store associate should remove all items marked
down to $0.01. However, there are times when an item is accidentally
left on the shelf. If a customer finds one of these items and brings it
to the register, they will be able to purchase it for $0.01.

To better assist you, please provide the exact store location and the
model or 6 digit SKU number for the product you're seeking to purchase.
Once obtained, I will partner with the store's management team for
further assistance.

I will follow up with you on 6/24/15 to confirm the necessary
information. If you have any questions or concerns, please do
not hesitate to contact me via reply to this email.

Thank you for your patience in this matter and thank you for choosing
The Home Depot.

Sincerely,

Andrea Holliman

I appreciate the posts from those who put so much effort into the thread. That said, I've read all 66 pages of this thread, and NOT ONE DEAL has materialized at my local Home Depot. This makes me wonder if we'd be better off having regionally-based threads, as the New England and West Coast deals don't mean squat for those of us in the Midwest.

Where in the midwest? I personally know someone in the Chicago area who is getting TONS of penny deals, even more than me. And in his area the markdown schedule seems to roughly mirror my local stores on the westcoast

BTW here's some of the penny items my friend in CHicago has found just this past week.

LMAO. Yeah, you don't mean to give me ****.

I fricking LOVE the "How many deals have you posted" argument which has NOTHING AT ALL to do with the subject. Nothing.

All I am asking is post your regular deals here and do the penny stuff in another thread. Christ, that is not asking too much. Are you one of those guys that wanted to keep Hot Deals all in a single thread too? Can you imagine how bad that would be? I am asking for a reasonable compromise. Please.

I'm done now. Please continue with the ******** logic of not doing something as simple as making a separate thread for things that litter this one up.

All Home Depot clearance prices/items are YMMV. Home Depot doesn't have a standard system.

Yes, I find it helpful to know what other people are finding clearanced so I can look for those same items at my stores. Sometimes I find the same deals, sometimes I don't.

If you're looking for uniform Home Depot deals stick to the sales flyer and try using a Lowe's or HF coupon to get an even bigger discount.

Your logic is what doesn't make sense. ALL Home Depot clearance prices/items are YMMV, including penny items.

A while back I posted a bunch of M18 bare tools deals that were marked down to $30. Most people posted that their stores didn't have those discounts and everything was full price. So how is that any different from posting a penny item?

What's the difference if someone posts a penny deal at one store, I post a .03 clearance deal at my store. It may still be full price at your store. The point is, now you have items to check in your store.

That's what YMMV is all about.

If we're gonna have a thread for just "nationwide deals" then it wouldn't be called the Home Depot Clearance Thread. That's not how HD clearance works.

FWIW I agree that it would be helpful to have a separate thread for penny deals. That way I could look for discounted items without having to read about the deals that I have no chance of ever getting.

Realistically speaking, I'm likely to be able to find something with $x.06 pricing or $x.03 pricing, but not $0.01 pricing. I'd just as soon look for the $x.06 and $x.03 deals and not even hear about the $0.01 deals. Based upon what all of the penny deal peeps are saying, your only chance to find the penny deal is in a shopping cart in some out of the way location in a store, on the specific day that they mark things down to take them out of inventory and toss them into a cart. The penny deal itself, the day of the penny deal going live, and the location of the cart in the store are all going to be store-specific. The chances of me finding a shopping cart in the electrical aisle in Indiana that is just like somebody's shopping cart in the electrical aisle California are so low as to be insignificant.

It seems logical to put all of the hard to find deals in their own thread, and to put all of the easy to find deals in another thread.

Just my $0.01.

Look at it this way. If someone posts a penny deal, that same item might be **.06 or **.03 at your store. Or even better, that item coulf already be 0.01 at your store also, and it is just sitting on the shelf with the wrong tag. That's how many peny items are found, not just in carts or up in the rafters. Look at the pics I posted from my friend in CHicago. All those items had yellow tags of over $100. And they remained on the shelf because no one thought of buying them at that price. But in reality they all scanned at 1 cent.

Think positive, it is very helpful to visualize success :)

That's exactly what I do. I use price check to search for Dewalt, Ridgid, etc, then filter for clearance. Then click any items you like, it will show how many are supposedly in stock.

As far as clearance items with yellow tags left out on the shelves, you can take them to Self Checkout, press the button for "Price Check", then scan the ORIGINAL BAR CODE (not the bar code on the yellow sticker). Sometimes it will be lower than what the yellow tag says. Sometimes it will actually be a penny.

The only penny deal I've ever gotten (which I posted a few pages ago) was a pair of nasty lady's garden gloves. One of the stores had a stack of them on the computer desk right by the garden center door with a yellow penny sticker next to it. Apparently they left them out and didn't get around to getting rid of them. Hey, I was nice, I only got 1. I could have got 6 more.

How do you handle large items? Haul them up to self checkout, then haul them back if not a penny? Can you take a picture of the bar code and scan that?

I got hold of one of the Bostitch nailers that was up in the cage for $48 (I know, not a penny), thinking that I might ebay it, but that must have just been an excuse, since now I'm keeping it!

lol check my ebay in my sig. Sold a few already. Also got a Ridgid Roofing Nailer for dad for father's day.

I have no clue how people are making out with large items like miter saws for a penny. I can't imagine these people are lifting them up onto the SCO to scan them. They must just have some clueless cashier scanning it.

You could always have any employee with a handheld scanner check the price, but if it turns out to be a penny, you probably just lost your chance.

Help me understand this, I still must be missing something about the penny deals.

Are you saying:

A) I should look for yellow-tagged merchandise, and then double-check every yellow tag's pricing using the SKU number in the price check app?

or

B) I should just scan the price check app for things that I'm interested in buying, using a text string like "drill" or "saw" to find good prices on drills and saws?

Are both A) and B) suitable methods or is one better than the other? Am I going to find a penny price using A) that won't show up using B) ?

As I understand it, that yellow tag that's over $100 may not reflect the real checkout price, so I shouldn't even be looking at it. Based on what you've said before, the stickers on the shelves are not updated as quickly as the prices in the computer, and you can rely upon the price check application to give you the real price at the register.

If that's the case then I should be searching the price check app for text strings like "drill" and "saw" to find the real price, with the hope of exploiting the situation where the price-check price has been updated, but the shelf merchandise price has not yet been updated because a person hasn't got around to changing the sticker yet. If that's the case then the appeal of the price check app is supposed to be that I might find a penny item that is still on the shelf with an **.06 or an **.03 tag on it, before it gets removed for disposal.

It seems that all of this daily effort in ferreting about at Home Depot is intended to find deals that exist solely because they have been slated for discontinuation as inventory in the computer, but haven't yet been physically removed from the shelves by a stockboy. Essentially, you're spending lots of time watching the price check application, trying to catch the merchandise in an in-between state in the inventory system, so that you get to grab stuff off of the shelves that a stockboy is supposed to be taking away, before he has a chance to do his job. Or maybe he's in the process of doing his job and he has pulled it from the shelves to put it into a cart to be taken off to the back room for disposal via a write-off, and you're snatching the item out of the cart, taking it from him before he's able to complete his task.

There's no one single method to find penny items.

You can use method A to find penny items. But you don't need to grab every single yellow tagged item to price check. Just grab yellow tagged items that have a print date of Dec 2014 or earlier. Those are more likely to be a penny versus yellow tags that have a recent print date.

Use method B to get your initial list of clearance items. Take note of items that end in **.03 or **.02. Those items will be the ones to drop to a penny soon. Then go find those items on the shelf. If they are not correctly labeled, just leave those items there, and check back a few days later. Once you do that a few times, you will discover the night when your particular store's inventory system does its drop down to a penny. So in the future you can just go there in the morning of the next day to swoop in and grab those penny items. It becomes alot less time consuming if you take the time to first develop a plan before hand instead of just wondering throughout the store. At my closest local store, I am down to just going there once or twice a week. I now keep a cell phone list of the .03/.02 items and I have a good idea of the specific day they will drop to a penny. It took me about 3 weeks to figure it out.

Where in the midwest? I personally know someone in the Chicago area who is getting TONS of penny deals, even more than me. And in his area the markdown schedule seems to roughly mirror my local stores on the westcoast

BTW here's some of the penny items my friend in CHicago has found just this past week.

Please post what your friend is getting. I, too, am midwest, but about 7 hours from Chicago. So he has no worries that I'll get any of his deals. None of the east coast deals translate to here. But Chicago ones should.

By the way, lots of penny items never show up on the in-store computer price check app. So it's not really advisable to use search strings to find penny items directly. Rather, its good to use the price check app to develop a list of items that are likely to drop to a penny soon.

(but as always, the above info is not always 100% accurate, as I have previously found items listed on the price check as 1 cent, and those items were still on the shelf at full price...dremel tools for example...but that is more rare)

My store has roughly 20 of those faucets. They've been that price for at least 6 months. I'm going to price check one the next time I'm there, now. That Dewalt is in our system, but it still rings up 25.03. That Milwaukee is still on the shelf for regular price, no yellow sticker.

I wonder if I can just buy a handheld from an associate for a day :)
