The last store I was at had about 20 boxes of Hitachi fuel rods. They would have been a penny each. They put them on the clearance shelf.

Problem is, they crossed out the UPC with a vertical line using black marker, and wrote on them $1.25 with the generic SKU number. They were un-scannable because of that.

$1.25 was still a steal, but I passed since I can't use them anyway. That was Manchester, NH.

They also still have a Ridgid and a Hitachi roofing nailer in stock, nowhere to be found. They have been on their inventory for 2 months now. Shows how well this store keeps track of stuff.

I have seen stores do the same thing -- deface the bar code on penny items so they can't be checked out, and write a generic SKU number in their place along with a handwritten price.

Doing that effectively blocks your ability to get penny merchandise, and forces you to pay whatever the clearance price turns out to be.

I don't see anything wrong with doing that -- it's the way HD *should* have been handling their clearance merchandise, rather than that stupid penny pricing paradigm that makes them lose their shirt. The problem with this approach though, is if they're not on top of their game and they don't remark the penny items right away, then you still have a window of opportunity to ****** them at penny pricing.

I think the whole idea of making clearance items price at a penny was really stupid on HD's part. It makes them give away merchandise. I once asked a manager why they did something so stupid, and why didn't they just mark the price up to $10,000 if they didn't want someone buying the item during the time it took them to pull it from the shelves. Of course, he didn't have an answer.

A couple of thoughts:

I know this has been mentioned before -- if you're one of those guys who won't put your location info in your GJ account info, then it would help to mention where you found the deal. Without location info, penny posting doesn't really help anyone to find a deal.

the other thing that has been mentioned before -- pics of a receipt or it didn't happen. ;)

Why do we have to prove anything?

I found those stickers in the cart one of the orange shirt guys was pushing around I went straight out to the tool rental section and cleaned the shelf off of hitachi nails. I went up the SCO and I thought oh **** I'm going to have trouble with this. The lady running the SCO asked if I wanted her to scan them and I said I'm ok. I ring up about 2 and I accidentally hit one of the yellow labels. It through the please wait for attendant flag. She came over and scanned each item then went over and entered the QTY on her computer. Never said a word about them being a penny.

I had to travel up to IN this week for work. LOL I drove so I could stop by HDs along the way. I ended up stopping at 15 HDs on the trip. I stopped at every store in Columbus, OH.

I got a Milwaukee impact, two tough boxes, two dollar Diablo blades, and the hitachi nails. I didn't have time to spend much time at each store. I'm sure I could have found more but I just couldn't spend much time and drive 600 miles in one day. I didn't see a single clearanced bostitch nailer. I was trying to find some of the M18 tools on clearance, but most of the stores had them at full price.

LOL ended up buying one of the heated hoodies too. The sign said $149.99 but it rang up $99.99. They are not available in NC.

If anyone is in Charleston, WV you can pickup two DC65's. I didn't have a good way to haul them. PM me if you want to know where they are.

Funny story about the impact. Most of the stores I stopped at on my way back Thursday were doing work in the store with a couple orange shirt people on each isle. The store I found the impact at was like this. An orange apron guy was all over the tool section. He would scan an item the get up on the ladder and screw around for a long time. I was trying to look around without being too obvious. I spotted the Milwaukee impact. I looked around the store a while hoping he would clear out so I could get it myself. He never did so I asked him to get it down. Now the box was turned different than all of the other boxes. You couldn't see the end where the model is. The SKU sticker was covering the model on the top of the box. He got it down and set it in my buggy. I said thanks and started to walk away. He said wait I have to scan that. So he scans it and says its $229. I see it on his hand held I don't know how he got it to show that. He said are you ready to check out? I said no I need to do some more shopping. He said i have to put a radio tracker on it then. I said ok. So he walks off through the SCO and disappears. I just walked over to the SCO and it rings up at a penny. I pay and start out the door. The alarm goes off and I have to go back to the SCO guy to get the item deactivated. I'm walking out the door the second time as I see the weird tool guy walking back over to where we were. He had a strange look on his face when he saw me walking out the door.

I think he knew the impact was a penny and was trying to make sure I paid $229 for it.

That is weird you saw the 229 price and it rang a penny, reguardless of if you knew or not, that makes me wonder now about all the items I thought should have been .01 and I go to the price check app to look it up instead of the sco price check button.

I saw a lot of yellow tags dated in April I check on the computer only not the sco

Do they SCO price check and the computer price check app always show the same price. If not I may have missed a ton of stuff.

Do we know enough about the firmware on their handhelds to say whether or not the employee was able to hit an MSRP button to display the $229 price?

That's what I'm thinking happened. His whole attitude changed when I pointed out that box. He was going to personally walk me through the whole checkout process. He didn't have a can I help you attitude. It was all about controlling me after I pointed out that box.

some Milwaukee tool was 59.03 ( or something don't remember exactly but it was .03 ) on their computer, $109.06( or something ) was the shelf tag, but rang up $119 at sco.
I think prices on clearance items get reset somehow

is there any way you can post pics or sku ##, model ## or link to that milwaukee stuff...

I think I found a 12v milwaukee box...it was a impact and drill combo... marked regular price $99...down to $79.... and box was marked special purchase marking on box... and price tag was dated less then 1week ago....so I doubt it was penny....???

I don't think they're ever going to do that -- they don't want your *** on a chair in your den, they want your *** walking through the store so you can make an impulse purchase. :lol_hitti

Lowes and Sears and Tractor Supply let you see clearance prices at whichever store you are shopping. Why the hell would I pay, for example, $220 for a nailer online for store pickup, when that store has it on clearance for $50? That's ridiculous.

The website already ties into their system to show inventory levels, so there's no reason why they can't show actual prices too.

Does Menards show actual store prices that vary depending on which store you select?

What if management gives you the items for free? No receipt obviously.

spend your time worrying about what matters most. you're focusing on the secondary problem instead of the real problem -- failing to list the location doesn't help anyone find a deal.

Yes a cart load of all kinds.Close to $1000 dollars total regular price.

Not here.....seemed like somebody is cleaning up most of my local stores like a vacuum...no more deals to be had like before...
I only frequent 2-3 stores within 10mins of me.....once a week or went I have projects...in this case I needed plumbing stuff...

I don;t make all day trips on home depot hunting deals......maybe I did before when dewalt mitersaw, tablesaw, ryobi stands, ryobi battery and various others were good clearance deals where you can actually find it.....Nowadays....the stores are vacant....like I said....somebody locally is cleaning clearance stuff up....nothing left...

I was lucky to get 8 boxes of it...go nicely with my 18v ridgid nailer...

Not around here. The area is populated with a large number of small footprint stores, and very few large ones.
I live in the Chicagoland area as well, and I also travel about thirty weeks of the year, all around north America. Every city I go to, I make a point to stop at different Home Depot stores in that area. Most stores have about the same physical footprint. While the stores in the Chicagoland area may not be physically larger, they have large inventories, just as all the other larger metropolitan areas (Atlanta, Houston, SoCal, Boston, Philly, Dallas, Phoenix, Denver).

The smaller cities (Oklahoma City, Tampa, Albuquerque, Des Moines) certainly have lighter inventory and variety. But the cities that are even smaller than those (Peoria IL, Peru IL, Champaign IL) certainly have even smaller inventories and variety.

My point is, that in comparison, the Chicagoland stores are very well stocked. But to date, two of the best stocked tool departments I've seen was in the Home Depot located on Military Highway in Norfolk Virginia (the one near the airport), and a Home Depot in Toronto, Ontario (can't remember the exact location). Ridiculous amounts of tool variety and inventory in both of those stores.

My little store is getting its tool area expanded big time. They are carrying a good chuck more of the Milwaukee lineup of M12 and M18 fuel tools. It's weird as its one of the smaller stores in the area.
