What the hell are "whirlywigs"?

Sorry - poor typing skills. Should read whirlygigs, not whirlywigs.....unless we found a new name for those gentlemen who have problems keeping the comb overs in place when it is windy out.........

How is the store on Rhode Island?

Being the only home depot in DC the store on Rhode Island Av tends to be quite busy and so they get behind in their inventory on occasion. Hence, there are usually some deals to be had. I find most stuff in the overheads in the aisles near the tool section. But usually I end up buying full pallets of stuff that way, which won't fit in your luggage too well. The managers vary from helpful to grumpy depending on who you get. DC also has some good subsidies on LED bulbs, so their prices are pretty low on single 40/75/100w bulbs.

I have seen some odd stuff there like a homeless fellow who loads all his belongings on a flat bed cart and wanders the store for hours to keep warm in the winter time.

If you have the ability to travel the Aspen Hill MD store is something like the number 3 store in the nation and they usually have some good deals there. But they have been remodeling and I haven't been able to find much recently.

How is the store on Rhode Island?

I have only visited same during daylight hours and on weekdays. The area is not the best for evening visits (unless you enjoy a little danger in your life) and way to crowed on the weekend (store is located in a shopping center with a grocery store and a lot of little variety stores/food shops). The store is very crowded, dirty (although it is getting better) and there are very few "finds". During my last visit there were two clearance areas - one in the electrical/lighting area, and one outside of the hardware area. Most of the items are a little dated and the prices seem to hover in the .03 area or higher (i.e. .00). I know that one poster noted that he was able to find some of the 3D printers there a while back, but my biggest find there was when they were discounting the silver diamond plate shop lights (got 8 of them there - manager discounted them an additional 25% if I would take them all) and 35 packs of nitrile gloves for a penny each. Checked my reciepts for 2015 and for the 4 visits I made to Rhode Island Ave the above purchases are the only ones I made. Not very impressive given what I have found at other stores. Just my thoughts.....

Hmmm... I have nothing better to do so. I will be going during the daylight haha. What other stores are around which can be accessed via public transit?

Whereas the Washington Metro area has mass transit - to include buses and subway, not sure if any of the Home Depots close to DC are on any direct routes (bus or metro). I live in Southern Maryland (Charles County) and we do not have ready access to mass transit unless we go to the fringes of VA, DC, or 20+ miles north in Maryland. So I will not be much help to you. I routinely plan a trip to include 5/6 stores within a 80 - 100 miles trip.

All of my travel is via a 2009 Ford Focus or 2015 Ford Escape which limits me to the size and scope of what I can bring home (much to my wife's relief.....although I did get two tool boxes in her Escape the other day). Actually my wife is very helpful in finding bargains and joins me on most of my trips. She seems to enjoy spending the day away from home - like to think it is the company, but we have been married 30 years and for most of that she kept sending me overseas to third world countries and the war zones.......Not sure if she wanted me out of the house or was hoping to hit the jackpot with respect to my life insurance. And unfortunately there were very few Home Depots where I traveled - although they were in Mexico and some Latin American countries.

Some of us use these at work constantly. A good carbide can easily run 10 bucks each....So to have a ton of 1 dollar throw-aways is a no-brainer.

Diablo's are awesome blades, they are essentially 75% off, and when you work on boats, trailers, cars, snowmobiles, etc etc etc.... blades can be invaluable as the torch can only be used in certain places. And while still young compared to many on here, if there is one lesson I've learned its get it while its good because some other b@$t**d is going to if you don't.

To illustrate my point the display was put out today and I cleared the last blades they had at 11am. All metal blades, no wood ones left.

Stopped at local store and picked up a hand full of the 1.00 blades.

Where are you finding the blades? None of the stores around here know about the promotion, I am wondering if it is regional. Someone mentioned the pro flier, but it is not listed there either.

It's not regional. Every store has them. The store here locally just wanted to keep theirs for whomever refused to put the promotion out....Just like last time...and the time before that....

The Rhode Island Ave store has a bunch of the blades. They show 8 of the clamp meters and 1 regular in stock but couldn't find either. Even asked an employee for help and showed him how to use the app instead of the HD site. Did get these though.

Got 10, they still have a ton if the box underneath is in fact new which it looks to be.

Other than that, not much else. You are right though grizzly, that store is a mess... I tried looking for the guy who helped me to throw him a bone and tell him he should probably get rid of those cables since he was so nice with me and helped me look for like 15 min but I couldn't find him again. Pretty sure that was his department.

Went to my local HD, all blades were gone. Checked the computer and 8 of 10 closest stores were sold out. The only 2 that weren't sold out are off the beaten path. Luckily 1 of them is close to my hometown and will hold me a few.

Got booted for using the computer today. Told him about the receipt survey and he said he doesn't know why the ask. Went down and used one by the lumber with no issues.

To sum it up then, you showed the store employee how to use the computer to buy penny items, and you're surprised that they booted you off.

I've said it before, the employees are your enemy when it comes to finding deals. They're in the store every day and you are not. It's not a good idea to teach them your method of finding deals -- they'll only screw you out of the deals.

Different guy. The guy that booted me was a total ***. Said the computer in appliances is only good for ordering appliances...

Guy that helped had absolutely no clue at all which is why I felt bad for him especially after he helped me search high and low for those meters. If I would have waited for him to show stock of 8 meters on the HD site we would still be there.

06GMC, when we play poker, can you show me your cards?

Haha. He is the first employee I have asked that was actually helpful and acted like he wanted to help you out. Sorry for caring a little bit. This is a ruthless business haha.

Now that I think of it they had a box of hand spreaders in the garden section that would be likely be penny as they are not found in the app. SKU is 602013 if anyone is interested.
They also showed 1 1.25 opener in stock. Didn't look for it though.

My local stores blade display was full, none had been sold yet and this was at 6pm tonight...I'm guessing because it had a price of 3.97 each :dunno:

Rang up for 1.00. Showed a guy who had a regular priced pack of blades. Picked up some for me and my uncle and they still had tons left.

My stores have been getting harder and harder to find stuff in. I went tonight and it looks like they are eliminating all the top stock. Multiple isles were this way. The isles that did have anything in top stock were very spread out and organized. This is a huge change from the way the store used to look. I think I'm going to need to start driving out of the area to get deals.

My store rearranged a lot and took a lot of top stock off the top, but only because they replaced it with winter stuff like tons of generators.

North Houston has been doing this too as I stated last week or so.

Also remember I passed along info a few months ago that a veteran employee told me they are moving to a Walmart style inventory. Basically, if it's not on the shelf in its designated spot, it most likely isn't in the store. No more searching and having employees search high and low for a product. It's intended to "trim the fat."

I have a feeling this is like me when I was a kid cleaning my closet. Go through tons of time figuring out what I want, dont want, rearranging it all. Looks good for a couple months then I just start "losing" stuff in there all over again.

Be interesting to see how neat the stores look come next spring. Maybe we'll all be buying DeWalt table and miter saws for a penny again

And I sure havent seen a Walmart store that stayed looking good for very long. Even the one they built 3 years ago in the town I live in. Sure its the nicest one around here, but thats still not saying much.
