I wasn't talking about penny items. I'm talking about clearance items.
Corporate has a policy about online orders -- all returns derived from online orders are not to be returned to store-stock/inventory. Period. All online returns are to be RTV'd. The returns system flags online orders and alerts the cashier. Cashiers are trained not to allow a rebuy.
This policy has specifically been designed to thwart scammers who try to use the online warehouse to supply private inventory for buying hard to find items at clearance prices through return/rebuy.
They know that there are some people out there who will try to buy merchandise at 100% of the retail price online, return it in-store for full-credit, and then try to rebuy it at a 75% discount at an 03 price point.
Corporate policy is that a customer can NEVER rebuy any online order that is returned. The cashiers are required to stick a green, yellow, or red RTV sticker on it -- where the color indicates the specifics of the transaction -- and to immediately march the parcel directly back to receiving so that no customer can try to buy it while it waits to get shipped back.
Locally somebody got arrested for trespassing into receiving, where he plucked RTV merchandise and tried to run it though SCO.
Let's stick to legitimate bargain hunting. There are plenty of good deals out there for anyone who is a good hunter.
