I found a .01 blower in a San Diego store. They wouldn't sell it to me...

Best they would do is $50 off the new model.

Here is the response from corporate:

Hello Mr. Xxxxx,

Thank you for contacting The Home Depot. I hope you are having a great day!

Generally when a product rings up for $.01, it is because it is discontinued and we no longer are selling it. Occasionally these items are not removed from the floor prior to be removed from the our systems; however, we do not sell any product for .$01.

That being said, store management will have the final discretion on all markdowns or discounts in their respective stores; therefore, any pricing discrepancies or requests must be discussed with management on duty at that time.

Feel free to respond to this email if you have any further questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Darryl Morris

Sounds like HD's tune is changing regarding sale of penny items

I always remind them that it's illegal for stores to charge different amount then what the cash register rings up at. There are state Laws to protect consumers and it's regulated.

I also had a rep who said it's company policy to honor the scanner. She told Ahole manager to honor it, which he did in end but still played games. I had another store manager who just honored it without any problems even before they pulled the down from the rafters with fork lift.

All bets off for display models. What that HD rep said is what I have been told as well regarding display models. It is up to the store whether or not they want to sell it.

Just inquired about a Ridgid 10in. Miter saw display model at my local HD this afternoon. Showed up in the computer as an"inactive item" qty 1-the display. Best they would is $50 off $349, I really didn't need it so I passed. But man that BF display area is really stocked! I wonder what the blowout items will be this year.

I found a PB-500h that had been taken over for store use. Pretty dirty, but looked to be intact...no luck convincing them to let me buy it.

You sure its illegal? I'd guess the law would only be broken if they took your money, not if they refused to sell it because its marked wrong.

I wonder how big of a deal this really is to HD, you'd think they'd be able to get a handle on it or just not mark the stuff to a penny. I wonder why they mark it to a penny if they don't want to sell it? If they dont want to sell an item, why not mark it to a $100,000?

Display models are not included in store inventory. So I am sure that penny price does not included store display. I had no problem getting display item sold to me, but never a penny.

I have bought 3 displays echo blowers for a penny. I had a issue today with a display and the MOD. He would not sell it to me even at the last clearance price. So it is up to the store and the MOD.

Yes I agree. It all depends on MOD. I had one who went out his way to find missing parts

I would debate that. I just saw inventory tags yesterday that said "count all displays"

I see different signs on different products. The nail guns say DNI, other power tools do not say that. For some reason they drill holes in display nail guns.

Yea but those are big and not expensive. They should worry about other small stuff.

I managed to find one of the 4 gallon electric hot water heaters for a penny today. SCO flagged the "wait for attendant" message. They tried to tell me it was a recall item and even sent someone from plumbing to the back to check the recall board. He came back and said it wasn't on the board, but the head cashier kept insisting it was a recall. I found it listed for sale on several websites, including HD.

I asked to see a copy of the recall and she said "the manager said its a recall". I showed her the HD site with the water heater on it and she changed her tune to "do you really think HD will sell you that for a penny?". I told her that the policy was if I had it in my cart and it rang up a penny, then it was mine. She then told me to take it and leave. I think she knew all along what the policy was and that she was going to be able to buffalo me.

It was pretty much a wasted day otherwise though. Four stores and all day in the car for a water heater and four of the Wiha bit sets for $3.83 each was all I had to show for it. I spent a few hours chasing a phantom Echo blower for a penny that the computer said they had and also chased four Milwaukee 2697 kits for $150 that didn't exist either.

Same here. I stopped regularly checking months ago. Every once in a while I'll check now. Haven't found any decent deals since just after the first of the year.

They just completed or are about to complete inventory so they won't have much as far as older penny deals and the majority of the things that we were getting were model year close outs so most of that is done by now as well. I'm just waiting for after the holidays.

Interesting. Saw a sign in my HD do not count displays in August.

Some displays are not real tools, those are not counted.

Also one store told me that the a display was vendor owned, I'm not sure that was factual though.

In my experiences all the displays have been counted.

Yeah Im hoping it will pick up around Super Bowl time. Seemed that was a good time last year too, with all of the stock still left from Black Friday, etc.

But Ive also noticed that they seem to be stocking less of every item now....almost like they learned something lol. I dont see displays and pallets full of the Ryobi battery pack deal, only maybe a couple small boxes with 5 or 6 pair in each box. Im sure there is more hidden away but Im guessing we wont see the massive amount left like last year.

The hand tools and such are lined up in what seems like the standard amount every year. Was just in my store this morning and the BF-only stuff is on the floor but wrapped in black plastic for now.
