Hi everyone,
Long time listener, first time caller. Maybe not...its been a while.

This must've been asked a dozen times, but any ideas on where I can get cabinets like these? I want them for the same purpose: store hardware, fasteners, etc.
Thanks!

Lots of used retail stuff out there, not much of it like that stuff.

My guess would be going to Harbor Freight on a sale day with a 20% coupon would yield better results.

google "used store fixtures" or "used nut and bolt store fixtures" or similar for your area. (I did) Lots to look at, little of interest IMO.

Lista or Vidmar type cabinets...I'd suggest looking through grainger's catalog.

If one can acquire them slowly and used it is a much better financial choice than feeding the greedy mouth of grainger from your bank account....

I see them on CL from time to time but even used its out of my league 600 per section. The cost of new that new cabinet could buy lot of tool cabinets use them for storing parts or fasteners

Just don't be surprised when you find the cost of used meets or exceeds Grainger's new price. Greed has driven the price of "vintage" storage to the point that a crumpled shoe box rivals the cost of new steel.

If you are game for some DIY, a storage setup like this can work really well.

Not quite as convenient as opening a drawer a d just grabbing something, but being able to bring a variety of fasteners to the project can be nice.

I use something like this to organize my plumbing parts, electrical components (separate organizers for 120/240 and 12v) and wall anchors/mollies

Those look like Durham cabinets and drawers. Not nearly as heavy duty as Listas, but not nearly as expensive, either. I just picked up a 6 drawer cabinet and drawers for about $300 from Amazon.

Link to the cabinet:

And a drawer:

The drawers come in different configurations. They're somewhat expensive, but some of the nicer setups I've seen using the HF bins would come close in cost after buying material, drawer slides, etc. and taking the time to build it.

When I worked at a printed circuit board manufacturing plant, the Facility Manager decided to change hardware suppliers from Mechanics Choice to Bowman. The Bowman rep brought in all new pretty blue cabinets, the Mechanics Choice Cabinets were up for grabs.

I labeled each of the yellow and brown cabinets with masking tape on which I had written "Please and Thank You". I was told "Get them out of here".

They sure look good in my workshop.

I found ten of those HD cabinets at $25 each IIRC (your picture has twelve) on Craigslist a few years back (June 2014). At the time, they were about $325 new. I use them to store tools as I have plenty of bolt, hardware etc storage capability. One of the drawers sticks a little bit (even after cleaning and lubricating), but they are solid.

The person that sold them to me said that periodically Home Depot installs new cabinets. He acquired them for free from a friend of his. I must have the brand somewhere around here, but I can't put my finger on the information right now.

Okay I found the thread with the information :

Graham,
Thank you for the Durham idea. I wonder if the lid can be removed. In essence, when the drawer is opened, the contents are readily accessible without having to open a lid.

Not easily. The piano hinge that connects the two is spot welded to the lid and drawer body.

I have a big stack of those drawers and bins. I love them.

Keep in mind that they are not as silky smooth as lots of other drawer units. They aren't bad, but a dedicated drawer may have better slides. I leave the lids on, but unlatched. It's easy to slide open the bin, flip up the lid and get the hardware. Since they sit on top of the slides (no fasteners) it's easy to latch the lid and take the entire box to my project.

If you get them, I'd suggest waiting a while before you cut the lids off. You might end up liking them.

If you are in the market for used you might just be a little early on the looking market. With a number of businesses predicted to fail you may find in some regions a good supply in the not too distant future.

At work I purchased three of these
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-3...est-Cabinet-in-Gloss-Black-H36TR6XD/303643854

Edit: I chose this particular box because the inside drawer dimensions matched very closely to the exterior dimensions of the shaller bins

And filled them with shaller bins
https://www.schallercorporation.com/

This replaced a durham mfg via fastenal setup. The fastenal setup was all labeled with part numbers etc but it was scoop dividers, and you could not take any individual bins out. Drove me crazy, and you had to pull the drawer all the way out, un latch it, flip it open, then shut, latch close. If you tried to push the drawer in before shutting the lid it would SLAM on your fingers. Ask me how I know. similar to this https://www.zoro.com/durham-mfg-drawer-cab-12-cmprtmnt-4-drawers-gray-307-95-d931/i/G0784235/

No regrets, and Vidmar etc was out of budget. For what I store in them 100LB capacity drawers is fine

In the only town in Pennsylvania, Bloomsburg.
That is the issue with homemade storage. With Lista/Vidmar ( or equivalent size ) draws you get at least 5x the storage per draw, with no lids to open. I have (5) 60" Vidmars, filled, I can go through all the drawers in all (5) in approx. < 3 minutes. That is equivalent to (5) cabinets times 12 drawers=60 drawers times (5) of the plastic cases= all the drawers together are the equivalent of 300 plastic cases.
How many plastic/metal cases can one pull out, open, then close in 3 minutes ? … not many.

As to cost for quality cabinets, I purchased Vidmar seconds for under $500 each, if your patient/diligent you can get used cabinets fairly cheap. I consider my Vidmars as one of the best shop/home purchases .

tonyciambrone,
I really like your idea. Which schaller package/set did you go with? Could you post a few photos. Thanks.
