I was looking at some putty knives, they had the husky china brand and the Hyde USA made ones. I looked at the two and husky felt like ten times the knife? The Hyde version had a two piece crappy plastic handle and a sheet metal **** end. I was embarrassed just touching it. The husky one had a beautiful handle, comfortable and rubberized. The **** end was a solid chunk of steel and could be used to tap or pound on something. To top everything off the Husky one was more expensive!? I found one that was mediocre but USA made.

Just because its made in the USA does not reflect quality or value. Just because its made over seas does not by default make it cheap, and inexpensive.

As you saw first hand quality is there, so is the price to reflect the quality. The vendor (HD) obviously spec'd out a requirement and the ODM complied and made it so.

Nothing Earth shattering here . . .

Hyde knives are the best and the choice of professionals (depending on trade), I have been using them for 20 years. You can keep that rubberized stuff.

have to agree, hyde arent available locally, but Richard or Marshletown
are my faves.

I dont like rubberized handles as theyre too hard to clean, plus they seem heavy in the hand.

Thick blades arent good either as you need flex. thinner and softer are better. Im talking here about drywall. Thick blades can be good if your just wanting to use it as a scraper

These Hyde handles were harsh crappy pieces of plastic, you would have to sand down the seams or risk wearing through your palm.

Good point on cleaning, I went with the hyde, but it was still cheap feeling.

I have faced this dilemma many times, especially with what you are talking about (scrapers and putty knives). I have a Chinese Hyde and a USA hyde. The Chinese tool is ergonomic (comfortable to hold and use) and (appears to be) high quality material. The USA tool is made of cheaper materials, has rough finishing and costs about the same or more. Sometimes it is a tough choice! I use the Chinese Hyde 10 to one over the USA knife.

I think both have their places but as the other member stated. Sometimes having a rubber handle is very hard to clean up after if it gets dirty or if you don't clean it right away.

At the end of the day can you really screw up a scrapper?

It makes me feel dirty, between the fact that I bought it at home depot and even thinking about the chinese **** I buy! It is the same when I have to go to Wally world, where they make USA goods look like they were made in a third world country.
