Thanks guys.

The red Ohio bar is olympic, the curling bar is a little bigger because I got the rackable one. The squat bar is just really heavy but it feels really good on my shoulders and neck.

thanks and after a closer look I guess your bars are Olympic size and maybe its cause your rack is so STOUT.

in case you ever need a bigger curl bar I used to own an IRON GRIP stainless 5 footer that weighed 32 pounds, but retail on it was about $700 and it's in California now.

great looking gym and i'm sure after you recover from setting it up that you and your family will enjoy it a lot!!

i'm guessing flat screen, music and ...?

I had/have a 12 inch TV/VCR with old VHS movies (007, 80's movies, Star wars...)

All done. Added the Trolley Arms today among other small things. Never have to sign a gym membership again. That’s a great feeling! I’d like to get a couple more things but I think I have enough versatility to last me for a while.

I have a Smart TV. Netfliks, Hulu, Vudu, internet, youtube ect. Everything is run through Alexa so the system, music, TV, even some of my security controls are voice command. Pretty neat deal.

PJ: i'm not sure i've ever seen that rack attachment. nice!!

also those plates and holders (and really everything) are over the top great.

nice to hear you have all the entertainment fingered.

I'm not sure Rogue has a LANDMINE as an attachment, but you might look into getting one since you have the room cause awesome for Core workouts.

let us know how you enjoy your new gym as often as you like cause I'm guessing more that a few of us are JEALOUS.

WELL DONE!!

I saw you mentioned pulley machine and guessing LAT? Nautilus had a couple different quality ranges and the white ones usually were pretty good quality if you might be looking for used. LAMAR FITNESS was another old quality brand (actually he/owner worked at NAUTILUS) so similar machines. Lamar ended as Life Fitness and still some of their machines there. Nautilus bot by Bowflex that changed their model to the bands.

PARABODY, BODY SOLID both had good quality and cheap quality equipment lines and Parabody ended up as LIFE FITNESS.

Tuff stuff, Parabody, Body Solid had a great crossover machine and some used weight stacks and some free weights.

or maybe ROGUE has what you need and you just need to rob another bank.:D

cheers

I do have the landmine attachment. I really like it.

Rogue has a pulley attachment for the rack but mine as you can see is pretty full. I could, and probably will eventully switch from a 4 post to a 6 post, which you can order as a kit for the Monster RM4, then I would have plenty of room to add that on. Fathers day is just around the corner???

This project was pretty costly, but the funding came mostly from a Harley Davidson I recently sold. The Harley was fun and I enjoyed it for many years, but it was a me thing. At this point of my life, I'm more interested in things my family can enjoy with me. Simple as that.

But I will keep an eye out for those banks.

WOW! That's an amazing set-up. I'm curious why the wood floor? It looks gorgeous, but I'd be paranoid about dropping a weight on it.

I was going to do just the rubber, but I thought it would be a cool little project for my oldest son to do together. He makes sure to point out to everyone that visits,,that he and HE ALONE sanded it down and poly coated it with no help from me. 10 year olds... Looks pretty cool though.

There are some awesome home gyms on here, I’ve been meaning to post a build thread of mine but wanted to wait until it was finished, but I guess I should know that will never happen haha. Mainly I just need to build a stand for my power blocks and paint the wall. So here it is currently

Foodie,
Drives is correct. The horse mats smell bad at first, but now we don’t notice as much. We have operable windows in the basement that help with fresh air.

Thanks guys. That is pretty much what I have read and researched regarding the off gasing of the rubber mats. I have a small set up a weight bench with some attachments, free weights, a 5 ft and 7 ft Olympic bar and a battle rope. I think I will just put a rug under it. My floor in the basement is tiled, and for sure I will not be dropping weights on it. All of the set ups here are amazing. I wish I had the room for that. Currently it is just one corner of my basement. It will do for now until I am able to get back to my personal trainer. I actually was going to be in a competition a few years ago but unfortunately was in a car accident rear ended by a teenager, that injured my back. So I have been out of the loop for awhile, as the rest of life just got in the way. But I am committed to getting back into it. It was the best I ever felt lifting weights.

JESSIE: since you have that cool gym in your garage with those cool old vintage cabinets might I suggest either building a nice steel stand for your Powerblocks or finding a cool old cast iron one and putting a steel or plywood top on it. check out the vise grinder stands thread I started years ago that might have some good ideas if you need a couple. I have in mind something like these and here's the link for the vise stand thread.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252799&highlight=vise+grinder+stand

if painting will help you work out more do it or what might work better is mirrors and posters since you already have your rack installed. or put up some cool metal vintage cabinets.

FOODIE: you really don't need much if any space to work out cause doing a few push ups and yoga is about all you need if you keep moving. have you tried an inversion table for your back? I got tired of going to the Chiro every week or two for the almost exact same adjustment and bought one after trying a bunch out about 10 or more years ago and I haven't had an advil or seen a Chiro for a back issue since and i'm 65 now.

good luck and post up a few pics. also go find the GET HEALTHY thread and start posting some of your workouts cause if you were in competitions I bet some of the members would like to know what it takes and some might want to do it.

cheers all and have a great weekend!!

Some of you sure have fancy gyms and there's nothing wrong with that. My place is a lot more utilitarian, with a lot of the equipment home made. An example is these plate racks I built:

Most of my equipment is 40 years old but it's not like you can wear this stuff out.

When we built the shop, this was my wife's dream. It has been a huge blessing since Covid closed all the gyms. Luckily we bought almost everything in 2018/2019 before prices for used equipment went through the roof.

well, no picture for now, phone app won't let me upload......to be continued....

Thanks man, someday I will get a welder so I can do metal work like you are describing. Wood will have to do for now though, thanks for the ideas!

JESSE: i hear you on being able to weld one up you like, but if you get lucky you might find a cast iron vintage base you can place a 1.25 inch piece of plywood on or a 1/2 inch steel plate and drill holes and bolt it onto the base.

another option since you have a wall next to your rack that has a bit of room is to make a hinge type 2x2 piece with a leg attached that can fold up when not in use sort of like some of the workbenches some of the members have in their smallish garages.

PJ: happy to hear you have a landmine attachment for your rack. I bought a LANDMINE that isn't attached to a rack years ago I don't use often enough, but it sure is a good workout.

ALL: if any of you would like to share your workouts and nutrition and eating here's is another thread that i started 5.5 years ago that some members use to post theirs. here's the link to the GET HEALTHY so we can use our old tools when we get older.

Some of the smoothest operating equipment I have ever had the pleasure to use was designed and built buy a private individual. Grumpy old guy, but boy could he make stuff. His name was Joe Gold. Had a little gym back in the day.

Installed these jammer arms and spotters. This is the setup I was waiting for. I can do lots of compound upper body movements and swing them down to work legs and core. Squats and deadlifts are pretty fun to do on this and it translations easily. Highly recommend.

I just started trying to piece together a little home gym. Over the last few days, I've purchased some Weider dumbbells from Walmart and a couple of rubber stall mats from Tractor Supply. I have to say, the mats & dumbbells look great on the floor of my garage. Someday, I plan to move them to my basement, which is where the lifting comes into play.

Not to hijack, and I haven't read the entire thread, but I need a bench and some other stuff and I'm open to suggestions on brands, retailers etc. All of this stuff seems to have gotten ridiculously expensive. The dumbbells were approximately $1/lb, which is apparently good pricing these days.

I can totally relate to getting older and the hassle of going to a gym, and I'm single. Having said that, I did renew my membership for two years approximately one month before the start of the pandemic. That purchase bears many similarities to some of my better investment decisions, but we don't need to get into that.

After reading this entire thread, I feel like I should delete this post.

Do you have a wall mounted rack?

PJ: that new piece to your rack looks like a great addition and i bet another added safety feature once your boys start working out and using your gym.

any new full view pics of your gym to share? just curious how much you are using it?

one piece that I'd definitely own if I had the ceiling height and room that you have is a VERSACLIMBER so if you happen to have another vehicle to sell or more gym funds the LX or sports version would serve you and the family well.

BTC: I know gym equipment prices have gone up a lot since PANDEMIC, but if you are patient I bet you can find more than a few nice quality used benches, racks and other equipment.

some of the old brand names you might look for on your local Craigslist are Parabody, Body Solid, Nautilus, Lamar Fitness, Cybex (sp?), Magnum and many others that if taken care of would last 100 years.

if you'd like to post up more specific questions and/or pics of your current gym or workout room I (we) would be happy to help you.

ALL: I'm finishing up the insulating of my garage so I can work out there on cold mornings and evenings now and i just picked up a TRX HOME 2 package. it was new in the box and about 1/2 price so before I buy a better version I can see if I'll use it and like using it in my garage.

Thanks for responding. Are you a golfer too? Apologies in advance for the long post.

I really don't have a gym, or even a workout room, and until this past weekend I had nothing at all. On impulse, I picked up some Weider dumbbells, 10s-40s in 5lb increments, from Walmart via a "Slickdeal". I also grabbed a couple of 4'x6'x3/4" stall mats from Tractor Supply. The dumbbells were approximately $1/lb, which is apparently decent pricing these days.

None of that stuff has made it to my basement, but that's the plan. Both the mats and dumbbells smell, particularly the dumbbells. I'm hoping that will improve over time. I have the mats airing in my driveway and the dumbbells are in the garage.

As nice as it would be to have available, I'm not looking to do anything as elaborate as some of the setups in this thread. I probably don't have the room, or the money. Right now, I just need a decent bench. In the interest of space savings, it would ideally function as flat/incline/decline/upright, but that's not 100% necessary. I'm sure at some point I'll want some heavier dumbbells, perhaps a rack for storing them, maybe an Olympic weight set, along with some kind of combo rack that would allow me to bench and squat. That's likely way down the road. I'm planning to keep my gym membership, but it would be nice to be able to do some stuff at home when you just don't feel like going, which becomes more & more frequent as I get older.

Just out of curiosity, I checked pricing on some Cybex benches yesterday. I found a site selling remanufactured benches for $1K-$2K+, which was pretty shocking and may be far from typical pricing. That makes some of Rogue's pricing seem dirt cheap.

Walmart has a little flat Weider bench that's 49 bucks. I suspect it's junk, but it has a decent user review rating. Rogue has a similar bench, which I'm sure is much nicer, for $179. I would gladly buy either before dropping a grand.

I'm not sure I have any specific questions aside from where people are getting their stuff and pricing. I've never bought anything off Craigslist, but I'm not completely opposed to the idea.

I haven't been in a gym since the Pandemic started and I'm really just looking to do anything at all to keep from turning to jelly, or bones/dust. It may be too late.

BTC: I used to play pretty serious years ago and haven't made time to play for a while now. that said I still watch the PGA players and i'm enjoying MASTER'S week and wishing i would have one time qualified to go there and qualify to play in it. my driver's clubhead speed at 50 years old was 132 mph and 190 mph ball speed and wishing i'd had the equipment these kids have now when I was little hitting marshmellows over 350 yards in the late 60's and 70's.

we can talk golf via PM's or I did start a golf thread in the FREE PARKING area years ago, but not a lot of guys want to talk golf here so it's not as popular as some of my vise and tool threads.

I used to pick up nice used Cybex benches for $200 range, but knew they originally cost a lot more.

if I were you i'd buy some P90 (several versions) DVD's and do Tony's 90 day workout that will keep you hopping with the small dumbbells and your body weight.

if you get some cash and want a nice small gym buy a concept 2 rower, versaclimber (yes it's spendy), and a nice weight bench and maybe a nice old Parabody power rack after gym equipment prices get back to where they were before the pandemic.

good luck and feel free to PM me if you want to talk golf or ask gym type questions here so others can see what they might be able to do to keep fit.

also feel free to start posting on the get healthy thread i started 5 years ago just before I turned 60.

cheers

This is off topic, but I lived in Georgia for 8-9 years and have been to Augusta a few times for practice rounds. It's a really cool place. Practice rounds used to be general admission and I think tickets were $8 right before they decided to implement their lottery system. I haven't been since 2005 or 2006. Every golfer should try to go once.

A month or so ago, I started running up and down the stairs to my basement. Every now and then I'll carry two 100oz bottles of Tide. I'm planning to use some of the lighter dumbbells for that duty.

I was a bit of a gym rat when I was younger. I've always suffered from layoffs of weeks/months, but I've really let myself go the last decade or so. I'm in my mid 50's now and am certainly regretting neglecting myself.

BTC, If you haven’t been working out for a long while, start ridiculously light and easy. At 50 and above, injuries come easier and take longer to heal. That’s assuming they don’ need surgery to heal..lol

Another thing to consider, at 50 and above, we can’t eat whatever we want, like we could in our youth. If you’re looking to lose weight, eating is as important or maybe even more important than working out.

Yeah, I totally get that. I'm sure I could drive by my gym and get sore. I always try to ease back in after a layoff, but it's usually never easy enough. I haven't been incredibly active in terms of exercise since the pandemic started, and I've done zero weight training, but I did do some pushups, planks, squats etc. for the first few months. That was eventually supplanted by beer drinking, which seems to be a lot more fun.

This thread has got me spending a lot of time on Rogue's website. That cannot be a good sign.

Sure it is. It will subconsciously motivate you in a “fitness” direction [emoji16]

All done. Added the Trolley Arms today among other small things. Never have to sign a gym membership again. That’s a great feeling! I’d like to get a couple more things but I think I have enough versatility to last me for a while.

Now you can sell membership to your gym

Built this up over the past several years. Mostly the wife's domain (powerlifting mostly), but I have started using it more often. Was a lot easier to find used equipment pre-covid.

We bought most of the stuff used, except for the rogue rack. I actually found that rogue reverse hyper at the local habitat for humanity for $150.

Our new puppy loves "Gym Time," but she never puts away her 'equiment' (toys).....
