Has anyone in here ever made their own Utility trailer? More specifically does any one have plans that they would be willing to share. I want to build a 4'x6' trailer to haul our camping stuff in when we go camping. something light weight and easy on the gas. I am greatful for any guys. :rocker:

Saw some over on Steel Soldiers forum for guys talking about hauling around their generators. I'd recommend keeping it big enough that it's not a "squirrelly riding thing" back there. Also, if it's too small, can't see it with mirrors when you're driving or backing up.

yup, and I hope youre not in IL you are better to buy something w/a title even if it is a POS that needs totally redone; the process to get a title for a home made traielr since Jan 2010 isnt worth the hassle any more

If you have a Harbor Freight near you, their little trailers are a great deal. I doubt you could build one for what you can buy one for. It already has a title too.

I was planning to make a trailer myself before I found my utility trailer for $500. Its a little longer at 4' x 10'2", but its heavy duty.

There are several trailer build threads in the fabrication section and one guy in particular has posted several builds. Im sure he would be willing to give you some pointers.

The little trick I liked the most is incorporating 3 pieces of unistrut into the deck boards so you have places to anchor onto the deck.

I built both of these trailers. The tandem was about 12 years ago.Cost of steel was about $400 back then.
The 5'x9' was built all from recoverd steel from a tear out we did at work.
As far as plans, I stop and look at trailers I like and take measurements and make sketches.

I'd do a 4+ by 8 so I could haul a full sheet of plywood (most of your build material will be 8 ft anyway) ........ and use 14 or 15 inch tires with 5 lug wheels .....

^^^ Agree. That describes mine above (post #9). The bed is 4'+2" by 8'+2". The tires are 205/70R14's on a 3,500 lb. axle that I shortened to fit the trailer frame. It tows great empty and fully loaded.

This makes things easier, keep the axle and then build what you need

If you need fenders, look for the local small engine shop with a bone yard.
Get some off an old garden tractor

I wish it was that easy LKDelta. Most places around here are gonna sell you that POS, but they are gonna keep the title and plate. It is never that easy. I wish it was.

So far Michigan is stupid easy to get a plate and registration for a home built trailer.

Ohio just wanted a weight slip, so they know how much to charge you for registration. When I registered my last trailer, been a few years ago though.
