Home Stereo/Receiver setup ?

I could not find a dedicated forum for home electronics, so hopefully this is ok ?

This system is in my garage. The tuner below is shot and just replaced it with the same model. Found a great used price.

The old Receiver had a DVD player and a VHS side, so I used the DVD tray for music CD's. The replacement Receiver is only a CD/DVD player. I bought it years ago to copy all my VHS tapes to all DVD's, but I never got around to it.

Here's what I have-

Digital Sony Receiver and a Panasonic DMR-EZ37V Tuner.

Sony CD Player CDP-CE375, 5 Compact Disc Changer Carousel, Ex-Change System.

Sony Digital Receiver STR-K750P.
32 BIT
64BIT
DSP
185 WATT

I do have a plastic housed bass woofer and has a built in amp, but don't know the manufacture. The housing or the woofer is making a lot of cracking noise, so I don't know if I want to take it apart and fix it or just buy a new woofer that the housing is wood ?

I have seen this receiver at 100 watts, but on the back of the unit, it says 185.

All of the DVD and CD hook-ups are the pin type, but the stereo is all speaker wire.

I play a lot of music CD's, but I would like to get a antenna to use the radio.
Right now, I don't watch DVD's or TV, but once I get done with the garage, I may use both.

I do not want to spend a lot of money, but I want speakers.

The speaker hook-ups are as follows-

Front-
Center-
Surround-

I've been looking on ebay for lower priced, but hopefully good quality speakers. Other than the "old school" brands that I knew many years ago, are expensive, but most are names I've never heard of before.

So, I don't know what to choose ?

Honestly, I'll admit that in my office, I've had a "Cambridge Sound Works" 4 satellite speakers with a small woofer, for my computer, and it ROCKS ! lol....

And for our living room plasma TV we bought a JBL center speaker and woofer system that sound really well.

The thing is, I know nothing about these sound systems.

Should I get just shelf speakers or get a TV entertainment center speaker, two surround's and a woofer ? (I LOVE & NEED BASS) !

How many watts speakers can I use for my garage system ?
How many speakers and what type ?
What woofer ?

With a lower budget, what should I buy ?

I am using my castoffs in the garage. A Pioneer Dolby Pro-Logic receiver from circa 1990 or earlier, the Cerwin Vega D3As I had as front speakers and the Pioneer 10" 3 ways I had in the basement as B speakers. The receiver sits atop a Cerwin Vega SW-12B, passive subwoofer. So far just the radio is used, but of course, I reserve the right to add a TV in the future, if I can ever get the garage cleaned out. I'm not much for playing CDs anymore. I'm lucky enough to have saved everything I replaced later, if still in working order. The Pioneer AC3 (what they used to call 5.1) receiver, in our family room, will be replaced by a 7.1 capable Pioneer from the theatre, which now has a TrueHD 7.2 setup. The still perfect AC3 receiver will go into reserve. I still have small Pioneer bookshelf speakers from the original Pro-Logic system I started with a million years ago, it'll be stored with. Never know when the Pro-Logic garage one will go **** up, and it's kinda nice to have a ready replacement. I'm all for using cheap but good sounding equipment in garages, and you can't get any cheaper than what you already have on hand. I bought a Boston Accoustics 5.1 set, many years ago for my bedroom, and we're now using it in the new family room, as we sometimes watch movies in there rather than the theatre. If you like lots of bass, look to them. Doubtful they still make the system, (MCS100) but the powered subwoofer had to be turned down quite low so as to not overpower the system. As far as sound goes, they weren't great, but adequate, especially for the price paid-$120.

Great setup, but some of what you wrote went right over my head, lol....

I assume I'll get better sound from bookshelf speakers vs a TV surround system ?

What watt speaker should I get with what I have ?

I looked at the exact same receiver I have, and it says on the back 185 watt, but the specs say 100 watt. Why is that and what's correct ?

How about these-

Sony - Core Series 5" 3-Way Bookshelf Speakers

i keep the "heavy hitter" downstairs in the basement....

Kustom PA speakers
4 channel mixer
32 band EQ
12" JBL powered sub
peavy CS400 PA amp
JVC 3 disk CD changer

I haven't built TriTrix but everyone that has talks about how great they sound and how loud they go.
Recently built a pair of 2-ways we use with the TV. They sound very good but not big enough for in the garage. Plan on building some garage speakers this summer, the TriTrix are on my list.
Now working on some home theater speakers.

Look for a pair of bigger speakers at the resale store. Look for a bigger bass speaker and at least 3 speakers in the box.

Then pickup a cheap set of surround sound speakers, like you are looking at. They can also be found used at the resale or on CL. Sometimes people throw out the big old speakers on bulk trash day.

Get a powered subwoofer too.

Great sound for music, OTA radio and TV.

We have 3 setups like this in different rooms.

The wattage question is really hard to answer as most amp listings are, um, generous. Additionally, it will depend on the ohms of your speakers as 4 ohm speakers will tax your amp more than 8 ohm speakers.

I would look on Craigslit and see if you can find 2-pairs of 100 watt speakers which should be sufficient for your needs. If you are a bass fanatic see if you can find some old Klipsch speakers which will maximize your amp's power and most have 12-18" woofers that can crank out the bass.

Look for a pair of DJ speakers. Something sizable with 12 or 15 inch woofers. Hang them with chains in the top corners of the garage. Sound quality depends much more on the speakers than the electronics that drive them. MCM electronics sells some decent DJ speakers for reasonable money. Look up their website. And there is always craigslist.

According to Amazon's specs, it's 100 watts. Some, especially older units, will have an IPP power rating which should be ignored. Thought they had all but disappeared, but maybe not.

Those should work fine, if you like them.
