Looking for some tool storage for my home garage. What is the best bang for the buck storage units? Also interested in ideas other than a tool chest.

That is a tough question without knowing anything about what you want to put in the storage? Some people that don't care about COO buy the $350, or so special at Harbor Freight. I have an old fashioned Craftsman stacked tool chest in my workshop with a set of Craftsman hand tools in it. I like to match both a set of made in USA tools with the same brand of tool storage. Another thing I like to have is a nice set of tools in a portable tool box I can quickly grab and run out the door without having to spend the time putting one together.

Well file cabinets and other sorts of used office style cabinets work good and cheap to find on Craigslist.

Basic mechanics tools and power tools. Carpentry tools. Home maintenance type stuff, but I do need some extra room for my tool collection to grow.

as mentioned, HF 44" roller for hand tools, maybe the tall locker for other "stuff"

lateral files and regular filing cabinets will work for bulky tools, or blow molded cases. i have a cabinet mounted on the wall that was originally part of a storage/shelf/cabinet system in a service van that we retired a few years ago.

it's big enough to store all my electric grinders, consumables, pin spanners, and safety glasses... welding hoods, face shield, and welding gloves fit nicely in the 2 bulk storage SO side cabs.

I have a variety of tools in my workshop. My work benches have a storage area underneath where I keep some power tools, chain saws, and other large tools. Both benches and my tool chest are pretty packed with tools. It seems like no matter how hard you try to have plenty of storage you will end up needing more.

1 thing that i do to try to maintain some sort of tool "control" i keep my carpentry/ home maint stuff in the basement, the garage is reserved for mechanical welding/fab work.

table and miter saws are portable, i can haul them outside if i'm doing a lot of woodcutting inside, 99% of the time they stay inside. i have enough basic hand tools in the house to take care of most repairs. i dont even have a claw hammer in the garage...

tools that may see double duty, i keep where i use them the most.
i keep my cordless drills/drivers in the house, corded drills stay in the garage, sawzall gets used in the garage most of the time, so it can stay there.

in my situation it helps to try to keep the garage less cluttered, and saves me havingto run to the garage to grab a pair of channelocks or a screwdriver.

Drink makes a good point. Whatever tool storage solution you choose to go with, buy more space than you need, as you'll soon out grow it.

There is an unwritten law, "What ever tools you have will automatically expand to fill, then over fill the space you have to store them."

I'm finding that categorizing and separating different types of tool uses helps with organization.

Place tool groups near where they are used.

While acquiring tools, constantly reevaluate and adjust what yo have and where and how you keep it.

A combination of Hooks, Shelves, Cabinets, and Drawers.

Watch out for a shrinking floor space, and keep as much off the floor as possible.

Take advantage of wall space.

Lots of shelves.. don't undersize them where it limits what'll fit.

The question of the proper depth size for the shelves rivals the question of a proper sized tool box..

I would enjoy sharing/hearing some thoughts about that proper size :)

For many cased tools; I think a 12" works great.
For nail boxes and smaller parts; I like the 8"..
The 24" are needed for some larger things, but I often tend to pile too much stuff on them at times; and end up with a cluttered mess.
The 16" seems to be My pet for a do-all shelf size.

Adjustable height sure is a nice feature.

Heavy duty older file cabinets (not the cheap HON stuff they sell at Sams Club/Costco) and lateral files can be had extremely cheaply at estate and garage sales. Most of my bulky and/or liquid stuff is kept in 3 vintage Steelcase 5 drawer file cabinets and 1 lateral file, total investment $35.

I also lucked out recently and got a 9 drawer 60" tall Equipto lista-style cabinet for $125, which is now my main hand tool storage.
