I'm cheap/broke and want to cover up the tires on my trailer grill. The tires are on their last legs as is and it doesn't get moved often. I do put them up on blocks but want to cover them up from the sun and weather. Anyone have a good idea?

Tarps?

I think silicone spray on the tires is supposed to protect them. Don't know how often to apply it. Otherwise, I would get treated lumber and make a box affair with a slot in the back to slide over the axle. Caulk the cracks to keep rainwater out.

Cut a tarp that is longer than the width of your tires plus the distance from the front tire to the back tire, and twice as wide as the tires are tall. Fold the flap over the back, down over the front and secure with bungee cords.

$9.99 for one ain't too bad, but look up how much one large tarp and a couple of bungee cords cost ;)

Ummmm... the way I read it the $9.99 is for FOUR.

I have a set for my RV and they have a wire that sits on the back side and provides pressure to keep the canvas in place. It works ok until the wind gets up pretty high.

HF covers won't work here with the car trailers - tires are 30~31" tall. Some magnets from Radio Shack and a cut up tarp would be pretty low buck IMHO.

I have to chime in on this. My neighbor gave me a set of covers for my trailer tires that he used to use on his motorhome.

The best thing for protecting rubber/vinyl is 303 Aerospace Protectant. Silicone is not good for rubber or vinyl.

Uh, if you have had the trailer a few years and the tires are worn much it would be a good idea to pack the wheel bearings. Moisture can get in the bearings.

I found some used school bus "backs" seat covers that were in good shape, they worked perfect and were free!
That genuine knogahide is thick and keeps the sun away!
Try a junk yard.

These are tiny trailer tires so those HF covers may be too large to be of any benefit. I'll see what I can come up with using a tarp and some bungee.

The bearings were repacked last fall so they should be fine. The tires themselves are pretty dry rotted but again, it only gets moved 1-3 times per year for friends parties. Once I do get new tires, I definitely want to protect them.

Thanks everyone!

How about putting the trailer on blocks, as well as protecting the rubber from UV? Will the tires flat spot when parked on the lawn same as pavement?

I def 2nd this. Silicone actually causes vinyl to dry out.
303 is the only thing i use anymore.

I have some old vinyl tops rescued from the dumpster. I use it to cover the air conditioner unit too. If the tires are almost bad replace them. We had a trailer come off in front of us recently when the tire blew out. We watched it shoot into the median, launch itself and the load into the air. Luckily, no one was hurt. My wife was driving and I told her to always think this could happen when following any trailer. Store them inside if this is an option.
