Homemade Air Filter System

Hey all! This is my first post. Glad to be a part of the GJ community. I recently just bought my first house, and I'm starting my first "shop". It is in a 2 car attached garage. I did add an extra 20amp breaker for the garage alone. (as well as all new flourescent lighting).

I've been doing some woodworking, and with the garage door down, of course all the sawdust is trapped. I would like some opinions on air filter systems...

I would love to keep the cost down, and wondered if building my own would be cheaper. Any suggestions?

Thanks alot!!

Brad

welcome!

It all depends on how much you want to filter out. A 20" box fan with a variety of funace filters could be a simple start. I've even see a nice box built for the filters to slide in an out in some of the wood crafter's magazines.....

you can get some of the smaller systems like from JET that will hang from the ceiling. I haven't tried them but supposedly they are pretty good.
take a loom at them, they are pretty simple.

I had a similar thought as you. make my own.
the plan I came up with was that I was going to frame a 2'x2' by about 4' long 'tube' in the attic space above the garage. use a couple of air return grilles in the ceiling and a box fan that I have a couple of. for the filter I was going to either use a reusable home AC filter and make it so I can slide it down through a slot in the ceiling or use a cnavas type bag more like the manufactured units do.
