So I want to heat my garage its 24x24... I have a great old Barrell stove handed down to me by my father and a bunch of stove pipe. I started to research chimney solutions and It seems a vertical chimney through the roof would work well for my application. So I started to look at chimney kits and WOW they are $$$$... Well, that's relative they are expensive for my budget...

Anyhow i am wondering if anyone has any homebrew chimneys out there and If so would you mind sharing your design..

Thanks,

You could research more on what you want/need and then buy individual pieces. Cheaper than buying a kit as most come with extra items for different applications.

You could check Craigslist or if your real cheap check the metal scrap yards but you get what you pay for. Properly inspect all pipe and accessories and also check your local codes for your proper installation.

Whatever you do dont cheap out on the chimny. The barrel stove will run higher stack temps than most factory burners and typicaly will only last 2 or 3 seasons before it becomes difficult to throttle due to air leaks. Put in a good, legal chimney.

I bought two sections of semi-truck exhaust and welded them together since the barrel stove is in the basement. They also sold elbows that work well. I got tired of replacing the pipe every few years and this has been working for about 6 years with no problems.
They are only 5" so I reduced down at the barrel.

Here is a video of the stove.

Ok So no homebrew on the chimney..got it. I guess I am looking at a Selkirk through roof vertical class a stainless steel chimney then!
like this:

Any ideas as to whether 6" or 8" is needed for a Barrell stove application?

hopefully 6" b/c the 8" is significantly more $$$$

Thanks for the responses!

Pick your chimney size to match the breeching on the stove. If it is 6"buy 6". Be very careful with Chimney. Factory built is better in operation than masonry. Even if you are not able to afford the system right now, as the season progresses there will be more and more sales, so pricing should begin to drop after Xmas. Make sure you have a matched system and it must meet UL 103HT ratings. That is a 2100* rating. There is also a UL 103, 1700* rated pipe. They are not the same and cannot be mixed. Pay close attention to clearances. 2" on the pipe. At least 18" on the vent connector section from the stove to the all fuel chimney.

In my business, I have represented Selkirk and Dura-vent. Keep in mind that you can void your homeowners by being creative. I've seen it happen. Dura-vent has excellent on-line resources for you to look over. Again, yes, you need every shield, collar and support.

We use the insulated Selkirk or dura-vent (I can't remember which, available at Menards in this area). Here's a picture of what it looks like now, we've still not got any insulation installed.

That vent is made by dura vent, sold by Menards. I used the same chimney (dura vent) for my barrel stove.

Mikey, is there a Menards near you? Often, they put on special financing promotions, like 12 months no interest. Thats what I did, took advantage of their financing promotion for my chimney! Just have the balance paid off before the 12 month promotion!

Thanks guys.. I had some good luck today I have been searching the local classifieds like a maniac trying to find used stuff but to no avail... Today I walked into the hardware store just to price things out and yeah it was pricey.. But a guy spent 20 mins going through an estimate with me and when I hemmed and hawed he said would 25% make a difference? Yeah! thats $100 bucks so I pulled the trigger on a Selkirk through the roof system. I couldn"t pass up that deal it was cheaper by a bit than online retailers and I got it from the local guy I'm happy. I think it's a good investment that will allow me to spend a lot of productive time in the garage.

Thanks for the input
