I need to free up some floor space in my garage when I am not using my MR6K-38 portable mid-rise frame lift which is around 1100 lbs. My plan is to build a wooden frame to support a 1 ton chain hoist to lift the MR6K-38 vertically along an inner wall where it will be secured so that is does not fall.
I need a 7 foot open span to accommodate the 77 inch width of the lift. I will use three 2x10x8's with 7/16" OSB in btwn them as a beam. I will use construction adhesive and lag bolts to mate them together.
I had initially planned on using two 4x6 treated wood as supports. I will use a 27 inch Simpson strong tie to go over the 2x10's and secure them to the 4x6s. I will then use four 3x9" pieces of 3/16 flat bar and lag bolts to secure the 2x10s to the 4x6s. I then plan on using 8" SPAX lags to secure the beam to the top plate of the wall and the 4x6s to 2x4 wall studs that I will have to put in at the correct location.
Would it be better to use three 2x6s instead of a 4x6? I would use construction adhesive and lags to mate these together. I'm concerned that the 4x6s will twist as the dry out. If I SPAX'd the 4x6s at the top, middle and bottom to a wall stud, do you think they will twist? If I used the 2x6s, I would still SPAX them to the wall studs. The 2x6s will run perpendicular to the 2x10s.
This may be overkill, but I don't want that beam coming off those posts.
