started with a 55 gal. drum cut about 1/2 way down , the top with the ring became the bottom , the top now made larger so the lid would fit on it as it sets outside , after widening i split rubber hose to put on the top as it was VERY SHARP . i'am using a sump pump branched off into 2 pipes one with a garden hose and the second with a angle at the center both are 1" , for solvent i will use either simple green/water or dawn/water the pump part is still open to help or suggestions , total cost so far $0.00 . keep those ideas coming .

Sump pump like for a basement?

I think it will flow way too much.

They sell the actual pumps for parts washers, a bit $$, but even if you spend $60 on a pump you are still way way under the price of a store bought setup!

I paid close to $300 for my parts washer from Harbor Freight, more or less same thing you built but it's a 30 gal barrel for the tank. I think I need to put a new pump, the Stoddard Solvent kinda melted down the plastic a bit

yep the basement kind and free too . thats why the branch off , to lower pressure (?)if it still too high i will branch off again , it's hard to beat free .

Also thinking a sump pump isn't made for continuous duty, it's fairly loud as well.
The pump in my setup I just leave running if I'm washing parts here and there. Some days it might run 5-6 hrs.

I have a 10 micro water filter setup on it as well, which helps filter the junk out. I have been thinking of a solvent reclaimer, but they are just under $2000, vs $200 for solvent that lasts about 2 months for me.

By all means if you want to try it, have at it, but think it won't work out so well.

ever have sinus so bad all you could do is nothing but drip , well finally got back out to the garage today and made this to hold up the pump a little higher . commits and suggestions welcome .

keep in mind that just because you are using water based cleaners you may be cleaning off some types of hydrocarbon liquids and the typical residential use sump pumps are not rated for hydrocarbons.
