Homemade scotchbrite bench grinder wheels?

Hi, I've been wanting to pick up an exl/scotchbrite wheel for a while now, as I've heard the tales of the magic they work. I can't really justify the price right now, as upgrading the bench grinder is a priority. Has anybody tried to make their own for a bench grinder? I've seen plenty homemade drill, dremel, and die grinder wheels out of sheeted scotchbrite, but what do you think about a 6" bench grinder one? I would only try with the finer ones as they seem less likely to tear and get thrown out of balance.

Obviously the 2 main obstacles would be making it round and securing it to the arbor. I have an idea of making 2 washers(or seeing if I can scrounge up something 5/8 by "large od") and bolting them together with the scotchbrite discs between. I think I could get them round with a template, some clamps and an exacto or utility knife.

What do you guys think? Thanks

don't need to be round, just use 4 or 6 of the rectangle ones from the dollar store, stagger them evenly and clamp between fender washers. works quite well and dirt cheap.

I have done this. It did work some. I found if your pushing into the wheel the pads separate. I did buy a medium grit 6" scotchbrite wheel and I will never go back.
I lost some knuckle skin a few times before it sunk in. Now I'm more careful of how I use it.

Makes perfect sense. I guess I was over thinking it. Thanks!
