Homemade Side Cabinet for Tool Chest

I have a decent sized Snap-On tool chest, but I am running out of room to store large tools. My buddy, who is a master in sheet metal, suggested that we build two full size lockers for either side of my tool chest. We have a guy who has a computer controlled hydraulic brake, so bending the sheet metal will not be an issue.

I need some pics of how the Snap-On tool lockers are built. So, if you have any please post.

Has anyone here made a tool locker for their tool chest? Post pics.

Someone on here had a great thread about building a complete toolbox like how you mentioned. I can't seem to find it with the search feature. Maybe someone else can help/remembers?

Yes, it can and has been done.
No, it won't be cost-effective if you three pros bill your time at shop rate.
Maybe, look around a bit before you start. I found a good side cabinet at an estate sale for $15
A friend of mine who is not bothered by aesthetics hung two-drawer filing cabinets on each end of his box. They have full-extension ball bearing slides, hold a ton of large cube stuff and cost him $20 each. I'd have at least painted them red.

seems like it's getting harder to find truck branded side boxes anymore.

15 years or so ago, when double & triple bank boxes started to become more popular, i was buying every trade in side box i found, usually for $100 or so each.
i have 5 or 6 of them laying around, some being used, some just stored until i have more space to expand my tool storage.

We are not worried about how long it would take...we think it would be a fun project. Someone post some pics:bowdown:

You could always make it out of carbon fiber!

But seriously, if you have a friend with the know how and the equipment, make your own. Cost wise you you should be able to do it for less than what snap-on charges but more importantly it would be a fun project. Making a custom stuff for your garage is what this forum is all about.

I'll put it to you this way - the guy has been restoring cars for 30 years, and is a master in sheet metal.

Show me pics of homemade side cabinets!

Two of the techs at work have side cabinets built by a local sheet metal shop.
If I remember I'll take a few pics tomorrow.

This guy had this one built at a local sheet metal shop about 7 years ago for $400, including hinges and latch, he had to paint it himself.
It's huge, and very well built.

Any possibility we could get pics of the interior?
