Has anyone made their own personal tool chest? I'm interested in this idea, but can't find much. Is the cost too great for what you can buy a cheap Chinese version for?

With the low cost of the HF boxes, unless you are an experienced welder and are already buying the steel in bulk, and have a metal brake, there is no savings in it. Unless you want something that doesn't exist, just buy it.

Yes with the cost of steel and hydro nowadays it is not cost effective to build your own. The only ones I have seen hand build are those that travel into underground mines.. in this application a standard tool box wouldn't last long

Depends on the type of box you are looking for and how you value your time vs money.

Back in the day it was traditional that an apprentice machinist would build their 1st box. I think this tradition is still somewhat alive in the aviation industry, especially for someone that focuses on airframe construction and riveting. Today with manufacturing technology, mass production and global competition. Very rarely is it practical for someone to build their own box. Those that do it usually are looking for something specific that doesn't exist or is exceedingly expensive commercially, OR is just for a personal project.

Several years ago a woodworking magazine had a cover story on making your own box/chest combo from wood. It looked pretty cool, and relatively easy to do. Made mostly with quality plywood.

Unfortunately, I lost my copy and don't remember which magazine it was.
