Thanks for posting! I've been wanting a Wicked Edge sharpener system but the price has kept it from happening. First tool I looked at was a clone that is probably built better and much cheaper. My project list just grew a bunch!!

Jon here from HomemadeTools.net.

I know this thread is an old one, but thanks for the kind words :)

To celebrate our 20,000th homemade tool, we made a new ebook featuring our top 50 homemade tools. You guys are welcome to it for free:

My dream is that the "enter your email" pop up would go away... You already have my email, the pop up covers the thing I want to look at, and it is a pain in the *** to keep closing it. Yes I clear my cookies and javascript cookies. I don't know why you want more emails, I doubt you sell them, so what is the point of the constant nag? Yes I am ranting. You are welcome.

What sort of compensation do you give the creators of the homemade tools your book is covering? Since the site only links to other sites where the content is published, I assume you're getting written permission to use the content in the book?

I'm curious what compensation offer to those original content creators.

I found a few things i've made in the past too. I have no idea how they got on there.

The site is a link aggregator, and a good one. They categorize and list content from different sites, linking to the original content. They don't ask for permission to do so, but as they are only linking to it, they don't really need to. The photos they post are another question, since those they don't have permission to use, but I doubt many people will care enough about it. It's all about sharing the information at that point, and they don't try to take credit for it in any way.

It's a good site with good intent.

Vegaman_Dan - Thanks for the followup post  You pretty much nailed it: we aggregate links to homemade tools, organize them, categorize them, etc. Our other sites (I don't want to promote them here, but they're linked in the header of HomemadeTools.net), aggregate build threads of various types: cars, 4x4s, boats, airplanes, cabins, motorcycles. Our company, BuildThreads, Inc., is based around curating the two greatest kinds of content on DIY forums: homemade tools and build threads.

The image usage on the site is similar to Google Images; it's allowed because it's more of a reduced-size pointer or reference to the original post. Each listing also links back to the original post three times, and fully credits the original builder and site. Google Images, or Pinterest, or similar sites, seem to lack that level of properly crediting the original builder, per the unwritten laws of forum culture.

If anyone ever wanted a listing removed, we would instantly delete it. Over the years, we have had a small number (less than 5) of removal requests, but since we are fully crediting the listed builders and sites, and we send a lot of traffic to them, everyone generally seems happy.

404 - Rant understood. I clear my cookies all the time too, and am constantly clicking away scrollers and sliders. Maybe we can just stop showing it to people with the same ip/browser combo, rather than relying on the presence of a cookie.

BTW you guys can see all of our GJ tool listings here: 425 homemade tools from GarageJournal.com. And you can see all homemade tools organized by site here: homemade tools by site.
