How many people here have built their own workbench setup?

I recently got two of the $44 clearance chests from Home depot and im looking into making a work bench out of them/for them. Heres the best pic I could find on the internet to represent what im trying to do.

Main differences are that mine is not gonna be as fancy, and I want to leave the boxes on their casters rather than have them on a shelf.

Im looking at making a prybar rack on one end of it too.


So has anyone built their own bench?

If so, post pics and share ideas/recommendations!

If both benches are ~35" with the casters underneath them, then all you really need is a top to span them. You can use a solid core door -- a Habitat re-store or other used lumber place are good sources -- or a couple of sheets of 3/4" plywood.

30-32" is a good depth. 36-38" is a good height.

I put a piece of butcher block over two cabinets (actually one cabinet that I cut in half). It's my main bench.

No casters. And mine is a little fancied up. But the basic idea is very simple. You can secure the top with screws coming up from the tops of the benches.

My old bench was made from a 1950's steel lower kitchen cabinet that had the old steel sink with the built in washboards. We installed the sink/washboard portion in our house and I put a new top on the base.

I was thinking of building a workbench very similar to this. I don't know if I would like the drill press right next to where i sit however. A guy would definitely have to keep the area clean.

With the magnifying glass on this bench, it looks like it is for smaller projects while some of the other surfaces are for larger ones. His garage is all about maximizing space, that's why I think the drill is on this one.

No there are still people finding them! Even if the inventory checker says zero, check your store! Online said 1 and there were 2 for me. other people finding 3 or more!

I now feel like I'm the guy in the ***** who's all proud of his 7" tool and then in comes Steevo sporting a full 12" and I'm suddenly relegated to intermittent back view shots so I don't detract from the quality of the shot. Thanks for that Steevo. I needed a little more humility in my life

Doesn't it though? I thought I had nice **** until I came here. I now understand just how 2nd class I am. On the journey of life in the shop I'm flying coach in a middle seat just to the left of the **** house next to a fat chick that should've been required to buy 2 tickets and gets up to piss 3 times between LaGuardia and Dulles I suppose it gives me something to shoot for.

Agreed, but like **** GJ often paints a picture of alternate reality that mere mortals simply cannot compete with. I'm happy with my 7" tool and my single car garage, but geez...
